I didnt read every entry above so this may have been mentioned. Ive heard hikers have "satellite phones". Any place they can is well beyond anywhere we can go. Hope this helps.

Sat phones are just a bit too expensive for a person not using one much, and also not 100%.

I hike and hunt a lot in places with zero service. I have a sattelite communicator called a Zoleo for emergencies. I can hit a check button and it sends my location along with a "I'm ok" message. You can also text with it, and there's an SOS button JIC

Just get Verizon they always had good coverage out west when I ran cross country. It has to be an account with Verizon, not a third part company using Verizon towers or Verizon prepaid.

Maybe they don’t do this anymore but Verizon did not own any towers in like Wyoming and Nebraska or Montana. The had contracts with with some company that already had towers up in those places. If you’re true Verizon customer then I always had good coverage in Wyoming and Nebraska or Montana. people can google Verizon pre paid coverage and se what the coverage is like today. The pre paid coverage is on cell towers that Verizon owns.

Version cost more to be a Verizon customer but then you get more coverage out west because they have contracts with the company out west. I never used a booster.

If you buy an unlocked phone most of the more expensive phones come with all the antennas for all the cell phone companies built into the phone. So you can switch companies if one has better coverage. Verizon used to have the best coverage , not sure if one is better today or not out west

T-Mobile bought Sprint many years ago and that gave T-Mobile a big boost in their coverage
