Hey everyone, I will be leaving for training soon with a company who does OTR driving. I have a CDL but its been 6 years since I have drove so thats the story there.

Anyway, I was wondering what kind of technology is out there now that helps you keep in contact with your family. I plan on getting a laptop and I do not know if the truck stops have wireless internet or what. If not, I plan to get a data plan with a cell phone company and surf the internet and video conference with my family that way.

In your opinion, what carrier has better coverage across the US as a whole? I know none of them are perfect and coverage maps are way off so I figured I would ask from experienced drivers.

I like AT&T. But you're going to hear a million opinions.

As for the wireless internet. Whatever carrier you get, watch your usage carefully. The per byte charges will eat you alive, if you aren't careful.

Superbowl watcher...got a bill in excess of $23,000.:biggrin_2552:

It really sucks that none of the carriers offer an unlimited plan anymore for aircards. I've come dangerously close to going over my 5GB limit several times, and I don't do anything but web browsing online.

I too have AT&T and am very happy with them. I used to have Sprint, and they were okay except for all the roaming charges I'd seem to accumulate. It's funny how they claimed to have zero roaming and yet always managed to bill me roaming charges.

They may have changed this in the last three years since I had their service, but when I switched to the Free and Clear America plan I was told there would be absolutely no roaming charges. They were right about that part, but what they didn't inform me of was there would be no mobile to mobile or night and weekends while I was roaming. The result was about $500 in charges from going over my minutes. I canceled my service with them once I found out why I got charged the way I did.

Prior to my having that plan, I would be charged roaming anytime the phone displayed "Digital Roam" or "Analog Roam".

I have Verizon for both my phone and Internet. The coverage is pretty good, about as good as you'll get. Price is a bit high, IMO. I have unlimited minutes on my phone (no texting or messaging) and unlimited usage on my modem. Costs me about $180 a month for both. The phone is $99.99 and the modem is $59.99. Rest is taxes and fees.

Wifi at truck stops is a bit scarce sometimes, and alot of the truck stops that do have it charge for it. I figured getting the modem from Verizon would be a better choice cause I can use it anywhere and only get one bill instead of having bills from every truck stop chain and still not having Internet access if I'm stuck at a customer or small truck stop.

I have Sprint and to stop the roaming, there is an option in all Sprint phones to stay on Sprint network only. I have been with Sprint since '03. Never had a single minute of roaming. Check your phones settings if you ever return to Sprint as your carrier. You might also want to see if your current carriers phone has this option if they have a limit on roaming

That's the beauty of AT&T. There's absolutely no roaming whatsoever. I mean never, in the near three years I've been with them, have I ever even seen my phone display say I'm roaming. Nor have I ever seen roaming charges appear on my bill.

I remember that setting being on my Sprint phones and you're right it would save on roaming charges. However, it also greatly limited the areas my phone would work. As an OTR driver, there are many places I would have to go to that Sprint network wouldn't be available. That's why I sought out the plan that offered no roaming charges. They just failed to tell me that I would be charged minutes anytime I was roaming, and it didn't matter the time of day or day of the week or which phone number I was calling. Had they been up front with me about this, I would have adjusted my usage accordingly. Since they didn't, I stopped being their customer.

I use AT&T for both cell phone and internet access. I pay $35.00 per month for unlimited internet. Hook my phone to the computer via USB and have a "LAN" connection. Speeds vary depending on system capability (EDGE-about same as dial up/GPRS-little better than dial up/3G-not quite true high speed/HSPD-speeds of 10-100 mbs).

    Baack Thanks this.
