Not to defend your DM, because we have had one that would pull that 'no freight' story (early on and we fired him), but the driver that came in might of had that load preset on him for a while... It's so easy to do the 'couch quarterback' thing, but as drivers we really don't see the WHOLE picture. However, if this continues DEFINITELY contact driver services and talk to them... They will review conversations, loads, history etc (hence the importance of 'documentation aka covering your ###' over the Qualcomm)...

 

You got the tractor and trailer safely off the road and kept it up right... The on-time thing WILL get better as you get more miles under your belt. Just expect lower miles and more time given until then... When you start getting there early and pestering them for drops and next loads, then miles SHOULD improve... If they don't, there are steps you can take for that. As said above, you won't get fired for a flat tire...

 

I don't think they'll fire you. Crap happens. A tire and wheel isn't as bad as laying a trailer over, or broadsiding a car. Sure, it will probably be less pleasant for you for a while, but you'll survive.

Want my accident story? I learned that it's entirely possible to jack a truck enough that you can pop a batwing off. It's embarrassing and a mess when it happens, but you know what? I have never done that again.

 

Most drivers have an accident story, and they're still drivers. They expect you wreck in the first year, and this isn't even a wreck.

Well known fact by those who run singles: if you're loaded, you're probably gonna loose the rim when the tire blows. It's factored in to the cost-benefit analysis when they decide to make the switch.

 

I always watch my wing in the mirror when backing or flipping a U in a parking lot. I was terrified that would happen to me for about the first 3 months I was out here. I heard all the horror stories.

 

I slid my 5th wheel back to where I'd have to be inverted to hit my truck! And FYI, I've got two accident stories. Grossing over $6K in damage. The first was the front 1/4 of an older truck. The 2nd was a little bitty scratch on a new Peterbilt. Just calm down, apologize a lot, take out an advance if you end up broke and promise yourself to do better. I have taken out about 6 advances in a year, all on very slim weeks. But now I can eat what I want, I manage to make a living as a single lease/op, and I can really only complain about the kids turnin into little people and I'm missing it!

 

I got a question for you Central folks. Is there a reason for the different colored trucks? I see white, grey, black and red ones out there.

So I called my 99 Thursday evening since my DM was out of the office at 4pm and asked if I could drop and hook. That was my load home. They said no problem central does it all the time. So I get there and the guard calls receiving and they say it has to be live unloaded. but not till Monday morning. I was pissed. here i am. 50 miles from home. and I can't drop. so I call weekend dispatch and explain everything to them and ask if I can go home and come back Monday morning. and to my very much surprise. They said yes as long as the reefer has fuel. cuts a day out of my home time. but stuff happens.
