My last otr company would stock up from FL dealer.

If you left without the proper tools for the season and needed some out in the boonies. You got ripped a new cornholio. I think the price was double if not slightly higher.

Speaking of which. Probably be a good idea to stock up if one can.
The tarriffs are starting to hurt with the increased prices of consumer goods.

    Think steel.

I wonder how much a set of chains would cost from China and having Amazon ship them.

    My .02-
I’m from Texas, and I had only seen snow a few times in my life before I started driving OTR.
People/companies just assumed I knew how to chain. I had no freaking clue!!! 1st time out on the Rockies I tried to figure out how to chain reading a truck stop magazine. It did not fare well, I lost a few chains before I made it to 1st unchain stop.
Years later, I’m still not confident chaining. Companies and schools don’t cover it, I was always nervous to ask because I was afraid it would restrict my route options.

They were $176 for 2 singles at the Ambest in Pendleton about 2 weeks ago.

Which is a bargain compared to the $500 fine for not having them, except in Oregon you need 6 total lol.

It takes a few times to get the hang of it.

None of us were perfect. Youtube has a few pointers though.

Why not practice installing and removing them in a dry parking lot instead of winging it when you need them? There are a lot of good videos on YouTube showing various ways of chaining up.

This was 2002, I had a Nokia candy bar phone(no internet access).
I had never planned to need them, was “OTR” but never ran west of I-35. At the time with JBH we didn’t even carry them, picked them up at chain bank locations and dropped them back off on the other side.

Consolidated Freightways (teamsters) used to have chain pay back in the day. Drivers would stop out in the middle of nowhere, take the chains off the fuel tank rack, tie them to your rear ICC bar. Drag them up the highway for a few miles, get them shined up real nice, hang them back up,get chain pay.
Just don't let the roving CF safety cars see you throwing sparks behind your trailer, grounds for termination.

Reading some of the comments here tells me that most drivers don't think they should be paid for work perform other than driving.
Pre/post trip inspection, no pay. Fuel the truck, no pay. Chains, no pay. Wait at the customer to load/unload, no pay. Sit at the truck stop waiting for a load, no pay. Etc, etc...
I'm surprised how many of you are OK with this. No wonder OTR companies are taking advantage of drivers. If you get paid minimum wage for all on duty not driving activities it will add thousands of $$ at the end of the year. But no Mr. boss man, if I ain't drivin' I shouldn't get paid. Well thank you Mr. truck driver.
