Not really sure what the unsafe conditions part is, oh, you mean the four wheelers with their dangerous unsafe vehicles and the steering wheel holders who never learned to chain

That brings up a thought, I have a buddy that owns a couple mixers, not uncommon for them to chain for mud three or four times per day, I'll take chaining for snow over chaining for mud any day

    D.Tibbitt and lester Thank this.

Old timer once told me, "show me a truck driver that likes to chain in the winter, and I'll show a driver ready for retirement"

I'm paid on a combination of percentage and hourly, anything I do within 100 air miles is hourly, beyond that is 30% of gross less FSC, if I'm local and sitting on a load, don't care if it takes them 1 hour or 5 hours, I get paid all the same. Those percentage loads, same deal, don't care if they take 1 hour or 5 hours (well, actually I do, if it takes 5 hours it might result in a layover), I'm still getting paid, I get 30% of detention. I view chaining, fueling, pre/post trip and all that misc. as part of the job, it's what I signed up for.

Sure. But if your boss offered you chain pay are you going to tell us you'd turn it down?

Hmm, since 95% of my seals are bolt or cable, any time I have to break out my cable cutters or my bolt cutters, I'm telling the boss I want paid extra

Hey, we're not out here for the glory and excitement of the open road. Well, some guys are but they usually get over that in the first year.. Bucks is where it's at.
I can remember a lot of times, especially at night and when I was already tired, that chaining up for the third or fourth time that day wasn't worth what they were paying me.
    But I did it anyway.

As @Cattleman84 brought up, I've chained to get out of the company yard before, maybe 50 yds, while the streets were plowed to pavement, and I've chained to get out of a customers dock, all of 50 ft, it's part of the job, it sucks.

    Cattleman84 and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

Well then, that explains your views, and there is nothing wrong with that. You have a good set-up. But not everyone is in your situation. If my boss gave me straight salary, I wouldn't give a crap about detention or layover or any other BS that gets thrown my way.
