15" to 30" predicted west of Denver by 9 pm Friday night, up to 10" on the Front Range. In some places, they have been getting 2"+ per hour all day.

Came this close..()..to throwing iron for real today! bobtail from Sac over to Reno this morning, at the Applegate chain check was informed "minimums at Kingvale". No biggie, only two chains, no trailer...off I go. Come around the corner at Cisco Grove and what do I see(?), 20-25 trucks getting iron fitted to the round rubber things...roadway is wet, barely visible snow on the shoulder, like it hadn't even been plow sprayed, myself and another truck ease on by (hammer lane of course) and proceed up, as we crest the hill before Kingvale, the new bright light wordy sign suddenly changes from "TRUCKS MINIMUM" to "CHAINS NOT REQUIRED"! Now I'm already holding my side from the group at Cisco, but over the crest at Kingvale, trucks are 3 abreast, drivers are angrily throwing things to the ground...and a big ole CHP dude is walking around with a big cheeky grin from ear to ear. Now I would estimate at least 40 or so trucks are all chained up ready to depart, but the only one departing is the chain control truck.....ROFLMAO x 2 !!!!!

My real question I am pondering as I wander down to Truckee...."If the requirements were MINIMUM, why were all the trucks applying, or have already applied, chains to both outside drive wheels?" I understand water and something of a brownish color runs downhill, does this mean, the stupid that the "mountain boss" works with has trickled down onto truck drivers?

    Dry road, Sparks/Fernley/Fallon/Schurz/Mina/Luna/Bishop/Big Pine/Independence/Lone Pine/and Olancha....crystal clear skies full of stars shimmering...and 38* at 2200!

Oh, no! Caltrans have been flakes for far longer than CDOT. It's only been since the influx of California idiots that CDOT has lost their mind.

I remember being led by CHP across the Grapevine after a closure in the late '80's, in packs of 50 vehicles at a time. We found one 100 yard stretch of wet road from Buttonwillow to Frazier Park, yet we were escorted the entire way at reduced speed. :biggrin_25521:

I don't mind chaining....In fact....I would rather chain-up than to have deal with "CC"....That crap eats trucks alive...I wish all states would ban deicing....People just need to learn how to drive in all conditions or not!!!!

That's because most Californians can't drive in snow....Let alone rain or fog....

CHP has to literally hold their hands.....:biggrin_25516:

Amen to Caltrans being flakes! Sounds like back in the late '80's the chippies just didn't have enough to do. . .:biggrin_25513:

It's now near 1100 and it's STILL not very nice between St. George and Cedar. Big rig on it's side near the 30 yard stick, northbound??????? He/she/it must have worked hard to do that. . .
We haven't had any stick on the south side of the grade, yet. . .
Wife says it's still snowing at Zion and is sticking there. . .

All I can say is we desperately need the moisture!

Forgot to remark on the lady/female Pumpkin driver going right on through Truckee chains hummin at 50+ mph, bare, wet concrete! Hmmmm, wonder how long before those chains just remove themselves?

Overhead sign on the 210 (San Bernardino/Redlands)..."CHAINS REQUIRED IN MOUNTAIN AREAS"! Hey Ron, you're going to need to toss some cables to get to your playground when you get home!
