Yup. Right now driving for GTI/Heartland/HeartGordLand Express Trucking. There's a little C-Store on Old Salem Rd that has no truck parking but can walk if you're feeling adventurous. Worked for me this am, was out of smokes and was in need. After that there is nothing here. Found it interesting the number of "drivers" here today who weren't willing to work and even the shop didn't show up. The temp is 37 and the roads are wet. Big bunch of female anatomies. Lol.

Yeah I know that li'l store, not much there but it's better than nothing.
If you had a bicycle you could pedal down the old road to exit 234,lot's of stuff down there like Carl's Jr and Burger King and a couple sit down restaurants.
It's about 4 miles so a bit of a hike on foot.
There's a great restaurant (The Chalet ) in Brooks next to the Pilot at exit 263 if you get a chance to get up there somehow, killer pot-roast!
I used to wander over there from the May yard across the street when I was stuck there for a while at times.

Shoot, most anything is better than Fontana/Ontario, including Kramer Jct. (30 miles west of Barstow on 58 @ 395.)

Hey, you made me think of Johnny Cash and his chains:

Beautiful drive, and I used to run it a lot summer and winter. But it's mostly two lane, and can be kind of hairy around Blue Mesa, Curecanti NRA, Monarch Pass.

Nope. There are some alternate routes, but they would be the long way around, and I wouldn't recommend them.

If you're running from LA Basin, you might consider taking the 40 across AZ and then grab the 25 at Albq.

Durango to Denver can be a bear no matter which way you go. 550 to Montrose? Nah, not in a big truck at this time of year. 160 across to Walsenburg then 25 north? Well, Wolf Creek and La Veta can both be "interesting at this time of year. . .
