sure, going West, take US 285 So. from Alamosa to Tres Piedras, then US 64 West to US 84, then N. to Pagosa Springs, about 120 miles outta route. Going N. won't help, all those roads had the chain law also.

But, if you makes people feel any better, yes the chain law was up, no I didn't chain up. It was snowpacked with a layer of gravel thrown on from CDOT. There were 7 trucks putting chains on at the E. chain station, I figured I'd go throw the tunnel and chain up. Still had excellent traction, ATC (auto traction control) never blipped RPM's never wavered. I slowed to 40 mph, slow enough to keep my tire tread cool and white, and ran it barefoot. Just before the snowshed CSP was heading EB, he saw I didn't have chains on, turned and followed me to the summit. Wherein he hit his lights and pulled me over. He didn't ticket me, but he did threaten to ticket me, which I gave him a challenge. He could follow me down the otherside, if I slid or had a problem because of the snow/ice he could cite me and I would take it with a smile on my face. If I didn't have a problem, he could eat his words. He did follow me, I didn't have a single problem. He was not pleased but he did tip his hat to me.

Now, I DO NOT RECOMMEND MY ACTIONS TO ANYONE WHO ISN'T 100% SURE OF THEMSELVES, THEIR ABILITY, OR THEIR TRUCK. Hence, steering wheel holders, put your chains on.

Yes, I realize that Colorado is West of Kansas, and we don't run west into or through Colorado. The highways in Kansas however do get icy and snowpacked in the winter. I'm not following you on the Going east won't matter. If you mean that there is no mandatory chaining, you're right, but it still does not mean that there is no need at times to do so. I've seen ice 6" thick on roadways. It's not uncommon to have severe ice storms.

Striker...I see where one can combine the "west and east" in Eaton's post...easily missed if the reader is in a bit of a rush reading it. Notice there is a comma after Colorado...this comma is used for a separation of comparison (or direction in this case)...

Re-working the sentence into two sentences is why commas are used...to shorten or combine different or similar things. So:

"We don't run into Colorado (to the west). And we don't go any farther east than IL, MO, or AR."

This is the drawn out version of the single sentence Eaton projected.:biggrin_25514:

Hey....some of you need to grow a pair......
I was strapping my load when another 'bedder asked me if I was headed to Denver...
I told him I was...Then he asked me if I was taking the 40.....
I asked "Why would I take the 40 when the 70 is a shorter distance?"

He told me "I don't like to drive in the snow......"

Hey...it even snows on the 10 at El Paso........

My Christmas wish is that it snows all over the country for 2 weeks straight...Max-chains enforced in L.A.; San Diego; Yuma; Tucson; Brownsville; Miami!!!!!!:biggrin_2559:

That would weed out all of the bottom-feeding "I don't believe in chaining up" Steering Wheel Holders......

Colorado separates the men from the boys, nothing beats running the 550, 50 or 160 during the winter!! Call me a wimp, but I'll go 200 miles out of my way to avoid the 550 if its snowing.
