Running across Minnesota a few weeks ago, it was snowing and right at 32f near dark. All was good, wet, and everybody was doing fine. Then all the sudden one car hit the ditch, then within 3 miles there were 4 more cars in the ditch. Moral of the story is, the cars will usually be the first ones to tip you off that things are getting greasy, but you have to be paying close attention and watching as far ahead as possible. The secondary moral is, there is good, then there is bad, slick, greasy. There mostly seems to be no in between grey or transition area.

On a related note. I remember hearing a story that was purported to have been proven true as I heard it. It was somewhere in WI or MN IIRC. The highway department crew boss for a certain district had some sort of relationship with a local towing company. Early in the winter season, they somehow had a pre-arranged section of road where the crew(s) would stop salting for 2 or 3 miles, then resume. The tow truck(s) would magically appear johnny on the spot and come to the rescue of unfortunate motorists.

Spun out on the East side of Fish Creek on Hwy 30 in Idaho this evening. 6" of snow in Pocatello and a foot in Idaho Falls. Slide offs all over the place on 15. It's winter!

Many times I have been driving north on 15 after you cross into Idaho the wind blows across the highway turning it into a sheet of ice. It's flat enough you can keep going until some driver panics and hits the brakes.
