I receive text alerts from CDOT of things happening on I-70 W. of Denver and all the other roads in SW Colorado, my current text alert history, just from CDOT is up to 80 items all because of the storn this weekend. In some cases the chain law was in place for a two or three hours, then dropped, in other cases it's been up most of the weekend.

BTW, for the anti-chaining crowd, from talking to a friend with one of the tow companies in the Mountains, State Patrol has issued 7 $1,000 tickets this weekend to drivers who refused to chain up and blocked the road. In once case it resulted in a 4 car accident that closed the highway for an hr for cleanup. Another driver blocked the E. Vail ramp MM 180 (which is primarily residential access) for 45 minutes. CSP told him he couldn't park and wait out the chain law, when he tried to turn at the bottom of the ramp and head back W., he spun out blocking the bottom of the ramp and the access road. He was advised that he would need chains to exit the highway and get back on due to ice....it'll now cost him $1,250.00 with surcharge.

Looking at a Job that runs I80 Wyoming to SLC daily out and back. I assume I could be chaining every week.

Am I crazy for wanting this punishment or is it not that bad?

Meh......You'll rarely throw iron on 80 running between WY and UT....

Just be aware that the 80 is notorious for high winds from Cheyenne to Evanston...

Black ice can be a huge problem on 80 too......

Again....If in doubt....Get out of your rig and take a walk.....If you slip and fall on your ###hat....Don't drive on it....

Wind... not sure how heavy the loads are. Maybe 20,000 #.

Is there a scale of load weight to wind speed?

At what point do you shut it down? Over 40 mph wind speed.

Go here and here for chain laws....

I have never thrown iron in WY....Just mainly in CO running 70 in the Rockies.....

I have thrown iron on 90 heading East from SEATAC....Running through Snoqualmie Pass.....

Btw....Most states in the West have an exceptional 511 system......Use it....CO IMHO, is the best while Cali and NV are tied for the worst......

I was told that 1mph of wind over 20mph for every 1000 # of your load is a good reference. I.e. 33,000# load should be ok in 33mph wind, 45000# ok in 45 mph wind etc. I have absolutely no idea if this is even close... Just what I was told. I've never driven in winds above 25 or so.

You have never seen the winds get over 25 mph on 58 before?
