actually, that was CSP, and it was scales plus inspections, and they were there Weds., Thurs., and Fri. Something like 300 inspections and 5 arrests.

'tis what I was told by CSP and CDOT, I have not been able to find 100% confirmation of it anyplace. However, if you notice, each chain up area has a sign that says 30 Minute Chain Up Parking Only. Thus, they can use that as their justification.

So, beginning this year, 2013, in Colorado you are required to carry chains from Sept. 1st till May 15th on I-70 from MM 133 Dotsero (first exit east of Glenwood Canyon) to MM 259 Morrison Rd.

Now, the logical answer, contrary to what the fine folks at OOIDA, Colorado State Patrol, and CDOT will tell you, is that you should carry them statewide. For the uninformed, there is a chain up location on US 287 N. of Springfield on the E. plains, there is also a location further up between Kit Carson and Hugo. There is also a chain up location on I-70 between mm 340 Agate and mm 359 Limon. There is also a chain up location on I-76 between MM 52 and mm 59 (this one has seen chains required three times in the last 4 years). Also, on I-25 there is a chain up location NB and SB over Monument Hill, as well as Surrey Ridge (between Castle Rock and Denver), as well as between mm 69 and 72, and one further north near Longmont. These are in addition to the obvious locations normally discussed on here over US 40, US 160, US 550, US 50, etc., etc., etc., etc.

The little inspection that WCP and I mentioned above this past week, they were handing out warnings and "fix-it" tickets if you didn't have chains during the inspection, I understand they wrote many of both. The fine folks at Werner and other like to use chain banks in various locations, that's great, until the chain bank runs dry and you sit, and sit, and sit, and sit until more chains are delivered. This past winter I know of drivers who sat there for 3 days waiting for chains to arrive.

Yeah...They waved me through....They must have heard me beyatchin'....
I already had three inspections in a month already.....The last one...Was at St. Geo. on the AZ side....
I was hauling Sailboat Fuel and they pulled me in because they thought I was the one who was "Overgrossed" on my trailer axles.....

Dummies...It was the truck in front of me....I think that guy was laughing his butt off when he saw me pull around.....:biggrin_25510:

There are exceptions unless they changed....
Last season they called for chains at Idaho Springs....A driver behind me was out of hours and he asked DOT if he could do his "10" right at the chain-up area....And to my surprise and his....They allowed him to do it...
Granted...They also allowed a Swift driver to chain-up in the slow lane too.....

Maybe someone spiked their coffees that night?....:biggrin_25524: :biggrin_2559:
