They just go crazy when they get a dusting of snow up there on the mountain. None of the Imperial County or lower elevation San Diego county natives have the foggiest clue about driving on snow!
One year when I worked for Imperial S.O. there was a storm that dumped a few inches on the grade. Vehicles went sideways and of course the road was blocked. Our idiot watch commaner, (El Centro native of course,) put out an "urgent call" for all of us who had four wheel drive patrol units assigned, to respond to the grade and start "evacuating stranded motorists."
I couldn't believe anyone could be that freaking stupid. There was no way I was going to be a part of that fiasco, so my radio suddenly developed "radio problems" and "did not hear the order." I just stayed on my beat over in the Salton City area.
It didn't take very long for CALTRANS to request that the Sheriff's Office "please bring those motorists back to their cars, so that we can clear the road." Once they finally got a plow or two put on a truck, they couldn't do anything with them, because of all the abandon cars in the road.
That had to be one of many embarrassing moments for that particular sergeant. . .![]()
