I’m headed to Cheyenne and should be there Thursday after the snowfall etc. I’ve chained lots of cars and trucks, but never a tractor. Does anyone have any links to chaining videos? I think tomorrow afternoon I’ll have time to practice, but wanted a tutorial.

And just to say before you guys light me on fire...I’ve got lots of snow driving experience in cars/pickups in Montana and throughout the West. I’m no expert, but I’m a careful and I’m more than happy to tell my DM that I’m not moving the truck because it isn’t safe.

FYI I have watched several episodes of “highway through hell”. So I should be an expert. LOL. One episode showed Al Quiring buying the gnarlist chains I’ve seen. 8mm nubs on them or something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is probably one of the better ones of those I've seen. There are lot. View most of them, and after a while you'll start to see a common theme and recognize BS methods or poor technique

There are 3 or 4 in this series. This is #1

The key to chaining is to start with chains in good order. Ie they are not broken cross links and they are not “twisted into themselves”. This demands a system of handling in all phases of chain process that keeps a chain from having the ends pulled through a section.

Learn to see what a twist looks like and figure out how to get it out, then keep them out.

I’m guessing you’ve driven through Wyoming in winter during a storm and have an epic case PTSD.

Less than 8 minutes to throw a set of triples. These guys probably chain up 2-3 times a day, every day in winter. They have it down to a science.

Seems like an awful lot of slop in those chains, though. I couldn’t tell how he was securing them. Looks like he was adding some kind of clip or something?

Here’s what I used to run. Take about 15 minutes to throw a set of 3 railers. I wasn’t as fast as the guy in the video.

In addition to what’s already been said and watching the videos on YouTube I will add that if you’re organized with how you store your chains the smoother things will go the next time you have to use them. Don’t just throw them on your deck plate in a ball. If you don’t have hooks to hang them and have to keep them in a side box just take your time and lay them in there, it will at least keep the tangling to a minimum.

Never noticed that. Maybe it was a link to hold the clasp shut on the inside chain?

    JReding Thanks this.
