Socks are legal in Colorado, and they weigh less. Like posted above they wear out quickly though, but a re quicker to put on. We actually carried a pair of them outside of chain season in case we were stuck in a dock or got stuck in he middle of an ice covered lot. Laugh if you want, but I've had to toss them on to get out of a parking spot off of 287 in Colorado when a random ice storm hit. Was faster than trying to break though ice with a plastic shovel lol.

that's why i have them, only used them 1 time and that was because the truck infront of me spun out and blocked the road..... he chained up to get going and after sitting i could get started (was going up hill at the time) took longer to get the socks out than it took to put them on.... when to the top of the hill and took them off

I've never even seen a set of chains installed, only see them hanging on the side of trucks. Wouldn't know how to install a set if I had them. I stay down south and what snow we get in TN isn't much.

I have driven in snow plenty of times, nothing on the scale y'all are taking about though.

I put a set on one night before I dropped down the hill into Golden, BC. Left them on all the way to Revelstoke. Sat on top of Rogers Pass for about 9 hours on that trip. Saw a buddy the next morning heading the other way, he sat at Golden for four days due to the heavy snow. I was in San Francisco by then.

The only good alternative to chains is sleeping.

Sleeping is smarter than chaining at any time, except for the occasional Hill climb.

If you really need chains to run, sleep instead. There is no load that can't wait a day or two. No one is going to starve, no plant is going to shut down, no one slides off a mountain and dies when sleeping.

Now in all seriousness I have only seen the tire sock thing on youtube videos. Seems like a pretty neat concept if a guy can use it to get out of a jam rather than tossing on the jewelry. I still can't see those replacing the good old trygg triples though.

Actually, there are loads that can't wait: hospital supplies. We deliver them. We have two drivers that cross Snoqualmie pass five nights a week to keep our hospitals stocked. One of the drivers goes with two fully loaded 32 footers. That's 32 pallets. Every night, for the same 4-5 hospitals. And our management is in discussions to make it six nights a week.

You can bet that each of those hospitals have at least a week of what you haul in stock. There's times you will not make the run, Chains or not.
