What are your intentions for 1/2 use ? Standard is 5/16’s.

We use 1/2 and 3/8 on our detach trailers 55 ton.
and 5/16 and 3/8 on the stepdecks.

Got it. Was just curious since I only deal with 5/16’s. I carry a few 3/8’s shorty’s(for extensions). I’m aware rgns and equipment haulers use 3/8’s and 1/2. For my age there pretty heavy to man handle, but will use if necessary. In any case, I have double up(different hook locations) on the 5/16 if needed.

As short as you can get away with. Those big boys aren't super easy to haul around. It's not unmanageable but it makes for significantly more work.

Hauling yellow iron. I carried 1/2" grade 80. 4'(6) 6'(6) and 10'(4) chains. Carried a couple of 3/8 10' chains. Had 120s at the shop when needed.

For 1/2 inch I carried 4-6ft and 2-10ft all with a grab hook on one end and a slip/foundry hook on the other. I also had 4-6ft 3/8 with the same hooks as well as 8-12ft 3/8 and 2-20ft 5/16 with grabs on both ends. That was the minimum.

If you're only hauling heavy equipment you'll be fine with mostly 5' and maybe a few 10'. 1 slip hook and 1 grab hook on each chain so you can use whichever end you need.

If you need longer than that just hook 2 together.
