The answers above pretty much covers all your chain questions. I myself keep 2 different sizes of shackles on my trailer as well, they come in handy when you have an eye that’s to small for either of your hooks….

I carry 4- 5 foot and 2-10 foot half inch. The 4 get used the most. Also 4 short 3/8, work well for combines. And 4-20 foot 3/8 just because ya never know. Also 8 good binders and 2 more older spares. All detach work.

    I have 3/8
    4x2’ with one grab hook
    4x3’ with 1 grab hook
    4x10-12’ with 2 grab hooks
    2x20’ with 2 grab hooks
    1/2
Same as 3/8 but no 20’ and only 2x10’
I mostly use the short ones and mainly the 1/2 inch ones primarily hauling tracked heavy equipment
The 10+-‘ 3/8 chains primarily get used hauling rental stuff with rubber tires

    I think I have 10 13 footers, 4 20 footers, 6 6 footers, and 4 3 footers (all half inch)

    And I have I'm going to say probably 4 3/8s 13 footers

And yes every chain has a slip hook and a grab hook, except for the 3-footers which only have a slip hook

But it is important to be said that we carry a lot more just due to the weights that we deal with. And spares in case it breaks or goes missing.

The reality is I would equip it based on the weights you expect to carry if you want to give an exact number

So if you're going to haul you know mostly 50 60,000 lb machines you won't need that much

If you're going to haul mostly anything up to say 120,000 or so. You're going to want a larger compliment.

So my number one recommendation is figure out what weight you expect to haul on what setup , and go from there.

And what sort of equipment you think you might be hauling.
