I prefer to use straps on steel plates, just X 2 5/16 chains on the front of them, but the straps get more bite than a chain, especially since the plates I haul are usually oiled.

I only chain wheeled machinery and some odd-ball metal objects, and of course to secure liquid totes as required by the FMCSA rules

X across the front for my plates with chains, weather I use straps or not depends on how stingy D.O.T is.

Is that all liquid totes? I used to haul alot of glycol in those small liquid totes to gas wells with just straps over the cages.

I always liked straps with corner protectors on steel plate with a chain cross on the front and back.

I usually used one chain across the front. I don't think dot required it but I was pretty anal securing loads. Never use 1 strap if you could fit 2 was my motto. Never had a load shift on me either.

Had one load shift, had to slam on brakes for a blind curve with traffic stopped around it, all that lumber came forward and left some pretty dents in the truck.
