Reviving an old thread. Noticed today my output shaft bearing is moving around. It’s not just the yoke, it’s the whole shaft. Any idea what it’d cost to have the bearing replaced? I know that since that bearing is bad there’s a good chance the rest of the trans needs to be pulled. I have pretty much 3 options. Replace just the bearing, and chance the rest of the transmission is ok. Replace the whole transmission which after being slow with work the last few months would put me in a pretty critical financial situation considering all the other stuff I’ve already had to fix. Or sell the whole truck and trailer for $35,000, and be done with it moving on to the next plan in life.
Changing a 13 speed output shaft

The output shaft support bearings are two cups and cones that face each other. Back box needs to come out to replace both pieces. Is it leaking oil out the seal yet? If not, run it some more. Get a quote for a reman back box minimum if you decide to do anything with it.
Otherwise, if it's a high mileage unit. Save your money and do a clutch and reman trans at a later date.
Cant advise on the next plan option........Rideandrepair and spsauerland Thank this. -

This shows how much it moves as best I could holding the camera with one hand.

Well, I say reman trans or nothing.
If the output bearings are worn, how worn are the other bearings throughout the trans, have to be similar. IMO. Just what I would do.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -

I thank book time is about 12 - 14 hours labor.
Sometimes transmissions have been ran with the yoke loose in the past. This can allow the shouldered bearing races to spin in the housing. The housing is softer metal than the race and the housing wears as the race spins. They have a spacer between the two output shaft bearings. When the yoke nut is tightened the spacers and shouldered bearing races obtain the correct clearance. Correct fix is a new housing. Put a 1" impact on it and see if it tightens up any first.
If you do not have a vibration and the seal is not leaking I would just give it more road.
We do back boxes on local trucks but complete units are preferred on over the road trucks as others have said.
In a previous post I said something bad about remans. There are quality remans.Oxbow, Rideandrepair and spsauerland Thank this. -
