but you had to study them in the first place they were not genetically passed down to you . When you first got a cdl you studied . The list of questions is simply a good aid for reference . You obviously have a good memory but some people do not hold information for long periods of time that they never put to use . I mean really how many times in the last two years have you thought to yourself " Wow , a 12 oz 5% beer is exactly the same amount of alcohol as a 5 oz 12 % glass of wine " ? I do not know about your state but here this kind of silly garbage is actually on the tests . Useless information . We all know we can not drink any amount of alcohol and drive . A simple " can you drive if you have drank alcohol " would be a better question for the test. Statistics are useless when it comes to driving . the last time I checked , knowing that 20000 people die each year due to speeding does not improve your driving skills one bit or make your log book skills better but it is also on the test here . Now figure you have absolutely no knowledge about trucks . then you go to school . Now you need to learn a lot of stuff fast . The more study material you have the better off you are .
Gotta remember something....as a former school teacher i can attest to this, they are not testing you to see if you remeber the material, anyone can cram and remember facts and such for a few days, they want to see if you can learn the info. They want to make sure you have a brain and can learn concepts, cause as we know in trucking you are constantly learning. If hou cant learn new things they dont want you out here.
Candle power ..etc.. glad I did not have to know all that . I think I can drive without knowing that and be just fine ! I remember when I was 17 I worked for a carnival . One day when we were heading out to SC a guy asked me if I could drive the truck that hauled the tilt a whirl . I said sure do not see why not . I hopped in and looked around and said " only one thing . What is that red and yellow knobs for " !
Maybe the biggest lesson you're learning is that as a driver, it's the DOT's world and you're just living in it. Well, the DOT and Walmart.
you gotta watch that Walmart . They are like the machines in the Terminator . Always watching , learning , analyzing your every move . They have thousands of agents . They are hard to spot but if you pay real close attention sometimes you will see one sneaking around in a high tech machine they call a tractor/trailer . Usually has some inconspicuous writing on it like " Walmart " . The back part is rumored to be full of surveillance equipment and high end computers for analyzing the data and possibly machines that actually suck the sole right out of people .
When the government changed from a regular truck license to a CDL you had to take the written and driving test..like you were a brand new driver..they did this over a 4-5 year span..so you could let your class 1 expire and get the CDL..and new York ..the only state let you take the test at home..as in an open book test..everybody else had to do it from memory like we have to do today.upsetting the other states for now we could have sub par drivers..the CDL was supposed to be a national standard test, setting up ONE drivers license..because before you could have 2- 3-4 drivers license..giving the cop one or another depending on how many tickets or warrants were on the others..the tests were basically be the same in Kansas as they were in Nevada or new Jersey... And all states are supposed to be on the same network to be able to pull up that ticket that you got in Washington or Florida... And as always..some of the answers aren't right..but closest to be right..
There's no open book test, that would defeat the purpose.I'll be studying for my double endorsement the old fashioned way, from the cdl manual.
I know in California that if you owned your truck ..you didn't need a truck driving license aka chauffeurs license as you were not an employee for many years..when I got started in the early 70s you did have to get your chauffers license no matter what...don't ask me what a candle power is but a light strength measument..clearance light minimum was 500..and they were pretty dim..and the max tow bar was 15 feet..unless you were towing a truck..why need to know...thank God things have gotten cleaned up with what you need to know...then log books were so much simpler..except for the 70 hours in 8 days..trying to keep the recap straight..and the laws weren't being changed almost Daily like they are now...
think who wrote these tests..some government worker who probably has never been in a truck..let alone drive one..they really shouldn't have questions about alcohol except ..anything over a.04 your drunk..and anything over a .00 with has mat...I remember I lived in Texas a long time ago..questions on their test in 2009 how many fatalities in Texas..or in2013 how many injuries..things like that don't test your driving knowledge or skills. I guess anymore its gotten agenda driven..each state making their own...the CDL was supposed to stop that..I guess old ways are hard to break..
How about the old questions about the low air flag. I am guessing they took that question out in the mid 90s at some point.
