Let me say there is nothing in the book that allows you "any time frame" however once a company gets to know their state DOT and what they allow when doing an internal DOT audit then they usually know what that state allows. On the road I have seen many drivers for being off 1 hour on their logs. I always stress log what you have actually done and don't use that 1 hour lee-way or whatever the company says. Let that lee-way be for your mistakes. If in an accident and my attorney is suing you, he will nit pick every minute and will win if he can prove you should of been on that break.
I would say you are usually safe being off 15 minutes just because not all clocks are set the same so it can be off a little and 15 minutes is usually safe.

What I stress to drivers is log what you "ACTUALLY DID" and know the meaning of lines 1,2,3 & 4 and don't speed and you should not have any problem and if all drivers would follow them rules maybe you would who is sitting would not be sitting. Those running illegal are stealing the load that you could be doing legally (if you don't refuse freight that might be a short run).

We use paper logs, but our company has the qualcom and we monitor their hours of service.

DOT stated to me about 3 years ago that us as a company should PREVENT a driver from running over their 11,14 & 70 hour rule. Well that's hard with as many drivers as we have, so you might be in violation and we don't call you everytime you make a mistake. So be carefull and call your log department to see how you are doing.

Just curios, who are you with and what state is your company homed out of?? I agree If your over a long period of time you can get burned.. And yes sued bad for an accident if over..Another ???? what do you allow you drivers to log on an avg. of their speed?? When I say .25 as lea way it like saying I can drive 725 miles in 11 hours.. Western states more.. That is a max speed avg..You cant budge it any further, but Ill use speed to keep from logging over my legal time.. Instead of the .25 over, Ill log it legal and my spped increases slightly...You can audit it. And PC Miler or whatever isnt going to throw you in a bracket so bad you go to jail or even get fined.. But anyway thats why I asked you about the speed your co. allows its drivers to max. avg..

you need to meet my hometown local DOT guy..he's extremly ANAL about DOT law

.25 over....allowance or not you will go to jail until they are sure you are legal if in a major accident
remember folks, we are the "professionals"
even then you will probaly be sued

.25 over rollin thru a scale you can slide by, and if nothing else be shut down for 10....but you scratch something and it's time in the hiney-hut

I see your point, and I say if a driver has a illegal log any time during the day, hes not doing something right. And must already be over on his 11 or something...I always know where Im hitting the risk factor..You can go to far to recover, and like you said consiquences are extreme if your over.. And something happens..I agree, Until its not cheatable though, drivers will not stop.. The only non cheatable log system Ive seen is the onboard computer logs..I dont care how long youve drove truck, you will not cheat it..

granted, i'm just a wannabe here...

but seems to me if they want you to log illegal, get it in writing... that should shut them up, or get you fired on some bs unrelated thing... *shrug*

Some co.s have tactical ways of starving you out and sitting you or not getting you home and just totally makeing life hell for you though..What do you do then?? Move on to the next piece of property next door where they most likely do the same??...I have to say I havent ran for an Outlaw type Co. in a long time...But I heard they still exist..
