well one way I find to get a round and maximize some of the time is instead a 30 min break I try to do an 2 hr so that 30 counts as part of my split sleeper when I have a ways to go and would have to take the other part of break before I arrived.
I go off duty any time I am not doing load related work.

I had a lot of typing in a responce I erased as I just had the thought. With loose leaf logs its your story tell it like you want, only you can decide how many times a day you want to change it, maybe several days. If you been trucking any why ask this? I used to think everyone was anonymous on here but I have been enlighten on the information age this week. If you cant figure out how and how much trouble it is to keep right then we can't either.

I don't run OTR. I'm a farming/semi-local driver so I know how to make sure that 1+1 makes 2 on my logs. Wouldn't even know where to begin explaining all the different little things you can do to make sure everything lines up. Some days my logs are an exact reflection of what I did that day, others days well .... let's just say it's more of a "based on a true story" kind of deal. It's not about what your logging, it's mostly about how your logging it.

One example,

Some things I will log even if I'm over hours, for example, running a half hour over in order to get back to the shop so I can go home. Does it make sense to stop and grab a hotel room (daycab) 20 minutes away from the shop just because your out of hours?? Nope, so get back to the shop, log it and if you run into problems defend common sense to the very end. You can plan your day all you want sometimes things just don't go as planned. These are the times I'll usually log it anyways, act of god kinda things that screwed up your day.

If you do this you have to be willing to defend your action though.

Learn how to calculate miles vs. time vs. odometer vs. traffic delays vs. which route you can say you took to make things line up vs. where you have receipts from vs. when you stopped vs. when you really stopped vs. any other variable you can think of.

Disclaimer: I am in Canada eh! They're not as anal up here and we don't have an all 'round witch hunt for drivers like you guys do south of that dotted line on the map.

I drive for GTI. Company driver. And you're not required to log "on duty" the entire loading/unloading process. If you're in the bunk, you're in the bunk. Log it as you do it. I log while I'm checking in/backing in. After that, that time is mine.

Sir... It's not cheating on your logs.

I prefer the term "Sanitizing" them at the end of the day.

If you log out getting loaded or un loaded does it have to show sleeper birth 2 hrs. I thought logging off duty didn't count against your 14 but a friend of mine did it and his company said no go but gave him a letter before hand saying it was ok to go off duty at a shipper. All I could figure was he showed less than 2 hrs
I think this forum needs a step by step instruction's on how to (they may be posted somewhere already) fill out electronic logs to maximize a drivers money making time -gray areas and all.
I see to many threads where everyone rambles on about how they do legal logs --yet next post they wonder why they cant make any money.
I know you just have to stretch the truth on the electronic logs --all the hints tips what ever they may be.
Well, maybe you are right - there may be more than a few who don't know how to squeeze an e-log. What I started this thread for though was the (for me) more mysterious subject of safely fudging paper logs. I am simultaneously amused and disappointed by the quantity of righteous indignation the subject provokes!

ah, sorry, thought you were the one who said that (about the "when someone dies" response).

And I don't know if the part about being antagonistic was pointed at me, but that's definitely not how I meant it. Id much rather see posts like this than two dozen people stoning someone because they made the mistake of asking if their 15 year old DUI or weed possession charge will affect their prospects.

As for the sleeper berth/shipper, I don't know. I've heard all kinds of variations on what's right and wrong. Someone just posted on here a few weeks ago that someone in their company (I think), was involved in a fatality. Driver was not at fault, but had been logging off duty while sitting in office waiting to get unloaded, and is facing jail time. (Not positive I got the story exact, but just from memory). I hear all kinds if stuff like that , talking to people in person and seeing posts here. I have no idea what's BS and what isn't, but it apparently happens. Then someone posted in this thread that DOT says its all good, log off duty, eat sleep and be merry.

I don't think we'll be getting around the 14 hr rule anytime soon (they have to look like they're doing something to improve safety) Or taking more than one reset per week (you apparently can't be too rested). Or getting a reset that doesn't include 2 periods between 1 and 5 am (gotta make sure we get the night drivers out of their sleep rhythm).

Sorry if I didn't add anything to how to get around the 14. I just don't think a lot of people realize the consequences that can come from illegally getting around it. Ideally, we'd have a unified voice and force a rule change. But I think it would be easier to herd flies.

What about those shippers that are "Driver Load and Count" and say so on the bills?

In my limited understanding, this 2 hours would be counted against the 3 hours between your 11 and your 14. It wouldn't necessarily count towards your 11 unless you had over 3 wasted hours. Can anyone tell me if I understand this correctly?
