#1 Hello Truckers Report Forum. I signed on to this forum to hopefully help the next guy or gal who is thinking about buying a 2013 Volvo 610 with I shift. I purchased the truck 26 months ago with 550k on the speedo. As I discovered “after purchasing”, this is about the time a lot of stuff goes bad. My truck was down for the first 10 weeks of ownership due to after treatment issues and a bad engine wiring harness. I could not complete a load . The truck first started to derate. They eventually replaced the def fuel pump, 7th injector, doser valve and nox sensors. After they corrected the after treatment issue, then I would lose the pedal. Truck would go to idle and the truck would coast to a stop. I would turn the truck off and it would reset and go for a little while longer. They eventually replaced the engine wiring harness. I eventually discovered that the radiator, starter and fifth wheel was bad. The instrument cluster audibles eventually went out, every gasket and o-ring had to be replaced in the heater core and it needed a three axle alignment. The oil recycler has been rebuilt and needs to be redone again.

#2 At 751,000 I got the dreaded “check transmission at next stop” message. I eventually lost pedal and we thought it was electrical, cab wiring harness, vcm related. I spent 3,000 on that discovery and still, my pedal would go away. I could let the truck cool down for 30 minutes to an hour and the truck would go but I had to keep it around 50-65 mph and keep the transmission temp below 138 degrees. It was sketchy at best. If I had to stop, I may be there for as long as 15 minutes. Yep, on the interstate, at a traffic light. So, I took to the dealer where they flushed the fluid and put on a new filter. The issue remained and I finally found a mechanic who diagnosed the problem as being a bad transmission. So, $17,000 later he called and said the truck was in severe derate, lol. Oh, by the way did I mention that I deleted the def? Yep, I sure did so, when he installed the new tranny, he updated the ecm. So, this activated the zombie in my truck called “after treatment”. It is there. It is a virus to my truck. So, this is another hurdle for us to cross. I am currently in my forth week of break down.

#3 I give all of my mechanics high marks. We are partners in this battle with government, politics and technology. The dealers sell you these new and used trucks knowing they are problematic. We are just now finding out that the I shift has a life time of between 600k and 750k. My advice. Test drive the truck for 2 hours. Back under a trailer, hook up, unhook a couple of times. Check the heat, defrost and a/c. Buy a manual shift. Now, the D-13 hasn’t given me a moments trouble. Find as many good independent mechanics as you can. Some dealers will not work on your truck if you tell them it’s deleted. If I had to do it over I would buy an older truck, 98 and older, I could work on myself. On repairs over 10,000k, I have Volvo credit redo my loan. If the truck has to be repo’d, my money’s not tied up. So far, so good. I’ll keep you up updated...

Yes. I seem to be stuck with this one for 22 more months, if the truck and my checking account will last. I will sell it or trade it for something else. I don’t know what my next truck will be. I’ve got my eye on a 1998 Volvo 610 with a D-12. I’ve heard nothing bad about the D-12. No Elog or after treatment. Ooolala. Let’s see what the government, politicians and DOT will do in the next 22 months to mess that up.

#4 Well, a little update. 5th week of break down. I have dug up all of my mason jars stuffed with money from the back yard because, you know we truckers got all the money. They installed the Volvo complete transmission and were so gracious to update my ecm software which erased the delete. I had to pay 1,000.00 for the redelete. Originally, the mechanic diagnosed the problem as being electrical so, he replaced the vcm and vehicle wiring harness and failed to attach a ground wire behind the fuse box under the hood. This eventually resulted in the trailer lights not working. I lost my first available load due to this. He was apologetic and fixed his mistake for free. Whew! So, the upside to this fiasco is, the truck is finally ready to roll. Remember, 1.) ishifts will not last past 760,000 miles, 2.) “Check transmission at next stop” message means you are about to lose your transmission. You will get this message about four times and then you will lose pedal.

Had the same problem around Xmas. 2 weeks in shop. Thankfully was under warranty 497,563. I've already replaced DEF system, numerous sensors, air compressor, valves, computer systems and EGR Valve. However, check engine light stays on and Volvo can not fix problem. Throwing EGR codes again. HELP!!!!
