im canadian and we have an endorsement on our class 1 that is for manual slack adjustment of brakes. it requires a seperate test , a very simple test to explain and demonstrate how to adjust a manual slack adjuster. do you have that endorsement in the usa ? if a driver doesnt know the basic operation of an air brake system then how can the driver say they are a competent driver? a pre trip air system check is mandatory as part of a daily inspection routine.

From what I remember you need an endorsement as kw9's rock said. I am going to look at the rule book and see what I can find.

in canada, it depends on where you live as to wether or not you need an endorsement to adjust your brakes---and i imagine in the us it would be the same--depends on the state of licensing--not a federal rule a state rule

No such endorsement required in Washington state.

Hi, if were me and didnt know thing about brake's , i ask shop lot's quistion's and if let you wacth them adjust em, then if need too be in emargency , you can adjust em a fully loaded garbage truck is quite heavy, next as a driver , you are suppse too be wacth the air gauge, wacth for a steady reading,i know on the older air tank's thay had drain valves for water and other junk, you were to suppose too drain this every day after your shift was done, you are suppse to do a pre trip, every were i apply for work, i go thru many brake check's , tug test on fith wheel, then trl brakes , pull foward with unit test brakes, then i pop trl brakes , leave tractor off, pull foward too see wheels roll , if they do there outa adjustment , no go with that trl, then i push trl in and pop out tractor same pull foward , buy this time the guy who giving a road test getting a little testy too say the lest, i have about 12 things too test before i leave the yard , some are like i dont need to do , but i feel safer when doing road test and just something i do when hook up too a strange trl,he told me i been out here as i do stuff on brake test that newbees dont do , i told him i like to be sure thats all,
next thing on your truck grab a note book, and note how many times the air dryer goes off or cycles that tells you your dryer is working right or not,

sounds to me that the brakes were wore down far enough that when you had to get on them hard that the cams rotated but then again i could be way out in left field lol

Some companies do a 'brake certification' deal in orientation but it's only an in-house deal... the feds don't require it. -
