You can fire a guy for anything you want. Just don't be stupid enough to give a reason in writing that can land you in a court room.

If you can fire a driver for not checking the oil and coolant, my company is about to have several hundred openings.

I'd fire a driver for not checking the oil. Short of being lazy, there is absolutely no reason to fire it up before checking under the hood...fluids, belts, hoses, etc...
What happens if you fire the truck up for 15 minutes before popping the hood and there is a hose that needs replacing? Now you've got to let it cool back down before you can do anything about it. Always better to find potential problems BEFORE you fire up the truck than to hope everything is still since the last time you checked.Dave_in_AZ, Tb0n3, pattyj and 1 other person Thank this. -
You don't need an employee's manual outlining for the need to check the oil. Checking the oil is part of the DOT pretrip. You can get fired for not doing a pretrip.
The company I worked with fired a guy for it. This driver slipped seated with another driver. The motor blew while the other drive was out. The truck was towed back to the yard. The owner of the company,supervisor,and mechanic were twenty feet away talking about what to do with the truck and if it was driver neglect. This driver comes on duty,hops into the truck and tryed to start it. It obviously didn't start. He climbs out,cussing up a storm. He walks up and interrupts the the three guys talking,saying that he needs another truck. The owner says,"No,you need another job." -
What does your broker do look out his window before his drivers start their shift to make sure they're doing pretrip?Tell him to do his own job and let me do mine.

Don't you keep a couple gallons of coolant in your side box?I always had extra coolant and oil.

First off. Technically he's right, anything could happen. I wouldn't be too worried though. Sounds like he's throwing his weight around. Basically an a hole.

How would you check the belts, front suspension, steering components, belts and tires if you don't raise the hood. And fluids need to be checked. -
