Customs Agents Thwart Cheese-Smuggling Attempt

EL PASO (March 6, 2010)--U. S. Customs and Border Protection officers have thwarted an attempt to smuggle more than 100 pounds of soft Mexican cheese across the border.

Agents seized 107 pounds of "queso fresco," a soft Mexican cheese, which was hidden in false compartments in a vehicle whose occupants were trying to enter the United States across the Bridge of the Americas on Wednesday.

Federal officials permit travelers to import personal quantities of cheese limited to about 11 pounds per person.
