The speed of China's new-generation bullet trains has increased significantly as of Thursday.
The "Fuxing" trains, running between Beijing and Shanghai, are now running at 350 km/h, cutting the travel time between the two cities to four and a half hours.
Staff members on the trains were given training ahead of the speed increase. Zhao Guang with the personnel training department at Beijing Railway Bureau said the training has gone well.
"We made a series of training materials designed to shorten emergency response times, improve efficiency and ensure safety. We have conducted pop tests this month to check the results of the training, and all of our staff have passed the tests," said Zhao.
More than 700 maintenance personnel have been trained online and have also conducted actual operations since the beginning of the year.
The increase in speed comes as China is expecting a tourism boom for the upcoming National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays in early October.
More than 700 million trips are expected to be made from October 1st to 8th.

When I was working in Germany, the Die Bahn ICE (up to 300 km/h) was a great way to get around.

@Chinatown when I was in China I saw some of the new high speed passenger trains. But I took one of the old fashioned green long-distance sleeper trains from Beijing to Hainan Island... The entire train was put on-board a ferry for the ride across the ocean there at the tail end of 36 hour trip.
36 hours in hard-seat going down from Beijing. When I went back I had the hard-sleeper bottom berth, it was like luxury compared to being in common hard-seat.

@Prof.Gringo - I used to ride the slow train and it was 12 hrs. from Beijing to ChaoHu City. The first couple trips were fun, but got boring after awhile. We used the berthing car with a room for 6 people and picture window and just one car away from the dining car.
Now we use the fast train which is just 5 hours. It's amazing how fast the country is advancing in every way; modern freeways and now building high speed freight trains to the European Union. Under ocean freeway to Macao/Hong Kong. They build the freeway in tube sections then converted a giant oil tanker into a crane ship to place the tube sections in the ocean. Then when the project is complete, will convert the crane ship back to an oil tanker. Amazing!
Wish I'd bought a condo in Hainan instead of Beijing, but too late now; the prices are too high now.
Here's the underwater tubes under construction for the freeway:

China wants to build a bridge across the Bering Strait, Russia to Alaska, then a super highway from Alaska to the tip of Argentina. China is willing to pay for the bridge, but want all countries that the super highway crosses, to pay their fair share. USA won't sign on, saying something like; "We don't want those stinkin' commies invading us." One of the lower levels would have been for trains.
Here's what that bridge would have looked like:

This is all about commerce, not war. Any invasion will be by cyber attack, air attack, satellite attack; not some bridge like would have happened in WWI.

My brother is heading over to China in December to consult to a developer of resort hotels. The developer is related to a Chinese-Canadian that worked for us here.
