I didn't know that the apprenticeship program was different from the GI Bill program so that is good to know. But with the Gi bill I have used it some since I have been out of the military and every school I have been too ( several) have required money up front to start class. The chapter 31 active duty Gi bill does not pay for schooling until you have attended for 30 days and the school certifies that you are passing your classes. For me there is no other way to obtain my chapter 31 benefits without a loan. The amount the Gi Bill also pays depending on time in service and your permenant home of record. My Gi bill only pays 1400 per month. Thanks for the other information though it was helpful.
For a 1 month, 160 hour CDL course it would be hard to attend for a month first as you would be done. That may be what happened to me as I paid the remainder up front and the school got the rest from the GI bill. I also got over $700 in BAH for that month so at your allowance of $1400 it sounds like you have max benefits. I think it all depends on how you work it with the school. If you want to go the full apprenticeship route with VA and school try Schneider since they have their own training.
now my choices are between Roehl stevens transportation Schneider CR England each of these companies all have their own training. Different contract requirements and differences with the VA. Stevens transportation is offering Free CDL training to veterans for as long as they are employed with stevens. CR England, Schneider, and Roehl all have the apprenticeship program set up with VA so now I am having troubles deciding which company would be best for work for. I need my home time but also need the money. Which offers both anyone know.
Who is the better company between Schneider and CR England? they both offer the apprenticeship and both seem to be great companies to work for. Pay wise I don't see any differences.
Id say Schneider. You see lots of stuff about both companies on here, mostly negative, but that tends to happen. People usually only want to complain and not tell you about the good experiences that they have had. The job is what you make it and a company can only provide so much. I had a midlife job change that profoundly affected my income and ability to care for my family. When it was all said and done I ended up in a great place that you rarely read anything at all about on the net. It also depends on what you are willing to do work-wise, Such as flatbed, throwing freight, tankers etc. For a start and to get your first year with the VA extra pay, Id go Schneider.
Thank you very much for the information. I will definitely give Averitt a check into especially if they do have a terminal here close. I am Ex-Navy BM2 from the USS Kearsarge LHD-3. Also Ex-Army 88K30, 88M20, and 92Y20.
I agree with Roadrealtor. I'm a fomer OTR driver but currently working in Iraq. I'll probably be returning to driving at the beginning of the year and after looking at all the possible options (I have to teturn to school to get my CDL back), I have decided Conway Truckload may be the best fit for me. I live in AZ and they have a traing facility there that won't cost me hardly anything. However, if I lived in Tyson Foods hiring area, I would definitely consider them. Even if I had to pay for CDL training. Between the companies you mentioned though... I would go with Schneider. Stay away from CR England and Stevens Transport. I have heard both good and bad about both but the bad far outweighs the good.
for my specific situation I have decided it would be best to go with knight transportation. Completely free CDL training work 7days on and have 7 days off. but the bad thing is that an 18month contract is required. But they do monthly deductions for 50 per month to repay for the school. I am going to ask if I can have more deducted per month to lessen the contract length. I will let you all know what I find out.
Just a word of warning about Knight. I drove for them for several years. Great equipment and great treatment. But they are not going to pay you what your worth. I'm just sayin.
