Pine Cones in WI are still there, the one at Peru, IL was remodeled shortly before it closed for good, years ago.

The one at Johnson Creek is considered good, the one near Madison (DeForest) isn't as well regarded. There's others using the same name, but those 3 I mentioned are the originals.

I know I'm from the Great White North and probably haven't experienced this particular quirk of the American cuisine yet, but why do you want your steak chopped before it's served to you? They are letting all the juices out before it comes to you, and with it the flavour.

I must be out of the loop on this one.

It's not steak. It's ground meat, turned into a patty, usually served with some poor excuse for gravy. Think TV dinner, dressed up as something edible.

Dog food, if your dog will eat that sort of slop.

You obviously haven't had good chopped steak. Such a shame. Apparently you haven't even tried it but yet you label it as "dog food"? That's a pretty big leap.

What you're missing is a "poor man's steak' with gravy and grilled onions and mushrooms. Don't knock it until you've tried it (the better ones) Plus, whole "steak" is much easier to screw up due to undercooking or overcooking, and is too often, too tough.

A little off-topic, but the lunch special at T-Joes next to the Sapps Bros in Cheyenne was Beef Stroganoff on egg noodles, and it's maybe the best meal I've had on the road period. I think they just called it beef tips. I've eaten at lots of great places, but that was something else.

I'll get a chopped steak and eggs every once in awhile, but my wife's is the best.

Hamburger steak and eggs. Grilled with onions, eggs scrambled soft, sliced tomatoes, no toast. No steak sauce, mustard instead. Unfortunately, nowadays it seems that outside of WaffleHouse and Cracker Barrel, it is almost impossible to get scrambled eggs. Most cooks do not know the difference between scrambled eggs and fried eggs.

Yeah, you're right. It probably is hard to screw up "poke holes in plastic cover and microwave on high for three and a half minutes."

If you do any poking around the food service industry, specifically suppliers who provide various components of a meal that can prepared with minimum time and labor, this is one of the most popular. And as a restaurant manager you can buy many quality levels, all making the legal standard, but which have a huge effect on the outcome of the final product. Add to that the kitchen staff which may or may not pay any attention to how it is supposed to be prepared, and well it is a crap shoot.
