Dren could you tell me how long it took to start your CDL training through WIA ? I have been on unemployment since July 08' and just found out about WIA , I probably could have had my CDL by now.

I went to orientation , and was told to come back and bring a Resume and Certified Copy of my Birth Certificate. They said they will then help me look for employment , and you cannot refuse any job they offer. The lady said it can take up to 3 months to get the grant , by then my unemployment will run out.

Can you go to CDL training full time (8hrs a day) ? I heard something that you can only go to school part time while on unemployment , because if you are going full time then you are not actively seeking work.

Any other options besides WIA or Central Refrigerated Paid School ?

    Thanks

The one thing you can't drive with a CDL is a motorcycle.

Hey J60608, from what I've gotten from my local WIA office it takes a few months to actually get into training. I started the process in March and wont be able to start training until "at least" July.

I have also found a job since then and was told that I might have a problem. Basically if you make less than "about" $220 a week then you will still qualify for the program. I'm lucky in that I am waiting tables and making $2.50 an hour plus tips "which I certainly claim all of."

Also even if you do get a job you are still required to look for employment in order to get training paid for. One of those hoops.

As far as going to training full time I was told that "once you get into training" that if you are in school full time through them then you will get a pass on the job search.

The best advice I can give is to try. Sign up and jump through the hoops if you get training paid for then great if not the only thing you have to lose is a few hours of your time.

Oh one last thing...here in KY they ask that you get your CDL permit first to show that you are committed. Apparently they have had people go through all the steps, get training set up, start school and then fail the drug test.

Thanks for the response Exploding , yeah I'am just waiting for my State Certified Birth Certificate to come in the mail then I'll go finish applying ,your right it does not hurt trying.

"Also even if you do get a job you are still required to look for employment in order to get training paid for." Do you mean they are trying to find you a higher paying job to disqualify you from the training ? Or it is just part of the process.

Thats another thing I have to find out , if there is no minimum earnings qualifications if you are on unemployment.I was told it is for ANYONE on unemployment. They did not say anything to me at orientation when I handed in my check stubs , we'll see when I go back.

    Thanks for the info.

The actively seeking employment part is one of those hoops that you have to jump through. Just one of those government things you have to do. I think earlier in this post or another someone wrote that they would find employers that were not hiring and apply with them.

If you are still cokllesting unemployment then you qualify (most likely as far as earnings.) If not then then I saw a chart hanging in the office that broke it down by how many dependents you have. Single with no dependent was like $11,500 a year and like with 6 dependents it was still under $14,000.

Just ask all the questions that you can think of when you go to your appoinments and make sure to do all that they ask (tests and such) Everytime they told me I needed to do something I did it that day. Others that were in the same group as me hadn't done theirs so I know that I'll be looked at before them. Just stay on it. Good luck.

So how can I find out if I have a local WIA office? I'm unemployed and since I haven't driven in almost a year with out experience, I'm thinking I need to take a refresher course so I can go back to driving, but obviously cant afford it. Wonder if they could help me out...

It is a Government program , I think all states have it , the funds for it can run out. It is called Workforce Investment Act (WIA) .Your local unemployment office will tell you if it is still available.

Funding for WIA runs with the traditional collegiate school year which is July 1 through June 30. In my state they only allow 10-12 people to go into CDL training per year per service area (meaning in the 4 or 5 counties that my local office has), this may be different from state to state as each state chooses how to dispurse money. Best bet is to get signed up early as the spots will fill up quickly. In addition to meeting the certain requirments on your end, job search, income level, you will also be rated by need so if 10-12 people are more needy than you they will get the spots. Try try try nothing to lose but time. Just ask at your local Unemployment office.
