Yep you are correct, my pickup is GVW at 14k and if I hook a trailer to her they also will get you too.

Florida is enforcing Florida law, well so they say.:biggrin_2554:

Not knockin your post but I can tell you from first hand experience state and federal laws do differ and a state can and will make laws stricter than the cfr code.

No, they can't. The GVWR for CDL classes is the same everywhere. States cannot make the GVWR for a CDL class more restrictive. They do not own the interstate system.

Other parts of the CDL testing can be different state to state because not all areas of CDL testing are federal mandated.

Well you can say whatever you want, but will tell you this much and not being a know it all. States do indeed legislate what laws can and will be stricter than the federal mandates, how do you think the states regulate speed limits and other things that differ?

States regulate axle weights different, legal oa lengths, axle combinations to include bridge axle weights.

So if the states cannot do this, then why is it so?

I'm trying to keep this on topic here.

States can regulate vehicle restrictions on provincial highway systems because the feds don't own these roads.

States cannot impose more restrictions on a interstate than what the bridge formula allows. They can impose axle placement restrictions, but not axle weight restrictions.

When it comes to the GVWR on CDL classes, it's the same everywhere. A state cannot say "if you pull a trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 LBS you need a class A CDL regardless of the GVWR". It's a two part law, because the bridge formula adheres to the entire vehicle, not just the trailer.

I would suggest purchasing a Class A with Air-Brake regardless of weight, size and type of vehicle. Even better get X-Haz, Tank, Doubles and lets not forget P for Cattle, Sheep, Dogs and People. LOL.:)

So you're saying if I rent a 24' U-haul type truck (26000lbs) and tow my vehicle (car, truck,SUV) on a single car rental trailer (roughly 3000lbs) a CDL A is required?

    Nope.

Lay off the high grade weed you're smoking...

A CDL A is required if the power unit is > 26,001 lbs, and towing > 10,000lbs.

With a CDL B, I can drive a GVWR 77000lbs triaxle dump truck pulling a trailer, as long as the trailer weight/load doesn't exceed 10Klbs.

whether its right or not, some states including FL, are interpreting the law as meaning=

any time you are pulling a trailer with a GVW over 10k, regardless of your whether your GCWR is under or over 26K, you are required to have a Class A CDL.

If you are ticketed you better have the money for dang good lawyer that is well versed in commercial vehicle laws. (even then you may be in for long ride through several appellate courts. costing several thousand dollars.)

The trailer can be loaded or empty, they will ticket you all the same.

Also they will ticket you if the power unit is rated for less than the combined GVW, loaded or empty.
