I work part time at a tow company and I was wondering if anyone knows if I take my class A CDL driving test in a semi wrecker with air brakes if I will receive a O restriction that will prevent me from being able to get a day job hauling trailers? The state il be taking the test in is Illinois.
Class A restrictions?

Yes it will. You'll need to take it in an actual tractor-trailer.
-
Really? All the guys driving them have class As and said I need class A to drive it
-
You do need a class A to drive it, unless you drive around empty all the time, but to test you will have to pull something, you can't just use it empty.
-
Ah gotcha, they said they have a truck I can use or they have people in town that would let me use their truck, hopefully I can get a tractor trailer to take it instarmac Thanks this.

Yes you absolutely need a Class A to drive it. The thing might be 80 ton, feeding air to a wrecked B train or something huge back there even a semi trailer plus your own rig.
But the TEST. The actual DRIVING test with the state, has to be a 18 wheeler with airbrakes and preferably manual transmission. Once the state is satisfied you can manage a 18 wheeler in the driving test etc you do not have any restrictions to speak of.
When the time comes later to make use of that Class A to run a 80- ton wrecker moving a 65 ton B train and so on... you are all over it. No restrictions to worry about. You can drive anything on the planet except motorcycles. -
Sweet hopefully the company can pull through with the correct vehicle and isn’t talking out their ##*. If not it’s off to trucking school in March!
