Class B is restricted whereas a Class A is not. There are some hardcore LEO’s who’ll pull over these operations and break out the portables. It’s very common in FL, where fly-by-nighters are rampant. I’d rather be legit and, also, know I have a backup plan, because tree work isn’t a long-term game.

    I’ve done both A and B (1983)

I’m in agreement with what @buddyd157 says.

“if he has no desire to be a trucker, then settle for theclass B.

it's cheaper, and quicker to take the road/skills tests.”

The B is so much less to deal with and especially at a time where his other studies are most important.

With the ELDT regulations in place, the core curriculum is basically the same for Class A or B. My local community college charges $4000 for Class A training and $3500 for Class B, so the A is a much better value. I'll always recommend people go for the A, even if they don't think they'll need it, because I've met plenty of Class B drivers who realized a few years down the road that they had to upgrade, myself included. That said, the backing is substantially easier in Class B vehicles, and of course the backing is what trips up plenty of students on test day. The pretrip, however, is only slightly easier for Class B students, mostly because they still have to do the in-cab, which I think is the most intimidating part if they're testing in a vehicle with air brakes.
