I think it started as a Peterbilt marketing scheme. They have used the word Class in their truck ads for eons, and one year came out with Class of whatever year it was. Drivers liked it, and put it on their trucks, regardless of the make or year.

Couple of month back I saw the nose of this tractor parked next to me, it said class of '06 on the nose. The bumper was barely hanging on, I believe bailing wire was involved, the side skirts were either chewed up or missing, I was starting to think it meant class of 1906, then as I walked by I saw that it said SWIFT on the door, that explained everything
