I was told in my driver training by the instructors that there are over 400,000 trucking companies in the us, I don't know if thats true but if so I imagine it would be hard to get them all on one list. I'd love to have that list, cause I'd find a job pretty quick.
You don't need a list. The news papers are full of them. I drive by places that have signs up, several times a day. And you can bet, those that don't have signs will be more than happy to take an application.
Well you're probably a truck, so I imagine you drive by a lot more places than I do . I check the newspapers, and their websites, and local craigslist, and by word of mouth. I do think I need to start calling companies one by one, but I still have the same problem that I need to know if they can hire me before I just head out there and fill out an application, I'm broke....and I mean BROKE. I can afford to drive 30-80 miles a day in my truck to check out companies that 9 times outta 10 might not hire me. I live in a smaller town and there are only a few actually trucking companies within 20-30 miles of me. However there are a lot more construction, concrete, landscaping and trash/waste management companies in reasonable distance. I'm convinced class B trucking is going the be the way I have to start in this industry, but hey I'd be getting pay checks and I haven't have that for 3 years.
djalrt; i'm currently on probation. it's extremely tough to get a job on probation because companies look @ u as a liability. if u do something stupid while on probation ur employer is responsible for ur actions & most of them don't want that liability. all i can say is be patient, explain ur situation, provide any necessary & all documents upon request by employer proving that u had nothing to do with the situation your in. then beg for a chance to prove that your not what they think & believe you are. i wish u the best of luck finding employment
Thanks so much for your kind works lonelyswmtruck. Have you had any luck since being on probation? I believe in the saying "you do the crime you do the time". I could of avoided the situation I'm in but luck didn't have it that way. I know it's not the end of the world, but when you're 22 and think you finally have a shot at a job getting paid more than 8 an hour and then have everyone tell you "no way" it is, to put it lightly, a little disappointing. It's me and my parents living in a house and we're all unemployed, my dad, after 32 years at the same company, was told him position was eliminated about 3 years ago. Even with his great work history before getting into legal trouble, he couldn't find work anywhere. It was a little hard going from having enough money for new motorcycles, hot tub, new cars then all the sudden eating ramen noodles everyday. I appreciate what I do have, but I know I have a lot to give back to any company that decides to hire me I'm just patiently waiting for the chance to prove it.
So a guy called me and said he was an O/O and wanted a team driver. I met up with him and talked for a couple hours. Come to find out he JUST got a job with a small 3-4 truck company and was just going to sneak me in the truck with him, without his boss knowing I was doing any driving. It sounded too good to be true, and turned out it was. He also was hauling flat bed, wanted me to driving half and half and doing the tarping and strapping for 350 a week
Yes, be weary when considering working for an owner operator! There are all kind of situations like that and could put you on the losing end. Also be advised, there are many stories out there about drivers getting taken advantage of and never paid! Not saying don't do it, just do your home work/investigating before you jump in a truck with someone. You can piece together a lot of info you find on the internet and such that will allow you to make a better decision. Just one more thing to add, if you are going to go out with an O.O. or are considering doing something like this, I highly advise you to not unless you have some emergency cash. Make sure you have at least enough to cover some extreme cab rides, hotels and expensive, last minute airfare! If something does go array and you end up on a curb with your back pack and pillow at least you will have some emergency funds to make it back home.
Come to find out he is not an O/O he is just starting with a small company. When I asked the company name and the owners name he would not tell me and then quickly said he will find someone else. As soon as i started asking questions he went to hell, so i don't think its a legit job.
