You gotta zoom in alot on the first pic but the follower got ate up so bad by the cam, the retaining pin is visible. Most likely has block damage as well. Chucked the bent pushrods in the cab and drove it onto the customers trailer for auction or possible engine swap.

The more I see all these moving parts damage, the more I like engines with overhead cams, even if they’re not perfect either.

    Easy fix.

Apples to oranges but there seems to be way more chances for something to go wrong on 5.0L Ford vs my old GM trucks with LS engines. 3 less cams, shorter timing chains/less timing chains etc.

AModelCat: That would be true too. There are lots of older push rod engines still working away including my Dodge with the Cummins.

I do prefer gears over chains as well and see what you mean about all those chains which can stretch etc.

Not to mention the tension on the cam gear/bearings when using a chain/belt.

The engines that worry me the most are the timing belt ones. Snap means scrap. Thankfully they haven’t found the need to cheapen the big diesels with belts yet. Like Bmw did with theirs.

I remember reading years ago in a diesel pickup magazine about a couple guys who modified a Cummins (I want to say ISX) to run with solenoids to actuate the valves, rather than the cam. I'm gonna see if I can dig that up.
