The driveshaft was on the catwalk when it was dropped in our lot. This is normal when a tractor is picked up with a load. Clearly not bobtail otherwise it would have towed from the rear. Tow drivers never pull shafts less they have no other choice. Not impossible, but it happened before the shaft was pulled.

I have smelled engines that have been loaded with ether. You can smell it for days after just rolling it over. Especially if it doesnt burn. I dont suspect it in this case. No glow plugs here.

looks like a severe over rev but usually a rod windows the block with that kind of rpm.
I’m going with possible catastrophic timing
Component failure causing valve to piston clash.

The bottom end still rotates with the starter. The camshaft is still turning. This is a rear geartrain engine so access to confirm timing marks would require much more teardown. There are no cam/crank correlation or timing codes logged in the ECM.

All my really good, destructive pics are on my laptop. This is a baby kitty that came in for a knock. The other 3 aren't quite as bad as this one. Scratches are probably pushing 30 thou deep. She got replaced with a complete, drop in crate engine.

When I have to diagnose something as unusual as this I start out by grilling the driver fifty ways from Sunday to get an accurate as possible understanding of when and how the failure occurred.
    Is this possible?

I can assure you someone will have to approve the 60K estimate and will most likely be asking questions.

This happens to be a very well known fleet. They may just get a free engine out of the deal. Just works that way sometimes.
