    We had a C13 in a 30 tonner come through the door like that last winter. It ran but not very well lol.

    Pushbroom: I have seen a few broken cranks over the years. So far all the engines were still running even though they cracked. Noisy though.

    The 1978 Mack 235 hp we have that seized up from no oil pressure a few years ago, the #2 or 3 main bearing was welded to the crank. Crank is blue in colour in that area.

    I did speak to my boss about the possibility the crank may snap down the road if we put back together.

    Boss said if the crank snaps, the truck is finished anyway.

    So, after peeling the bearing off, 120 grit, 180 grit, 320 grit, 400 grit, 600 grit sandpaper and then scotch brite the crank back to polished finish, plasti-gage check, all new bearings, put everything back together. (Reinstall the key that drives the oil pump after it fell out)

    Truck fired up and runs like new with good oil pressure again.

    I usually take a lot of pictures of engine damage but I actually have none for this Mack. I must be careless. :(

    While these Cummins 12v 5.9’s are legendary for their reliability and strength. They do have some weaknesses.

    This came out of my boss’s pickup.

    This is the replacement engine for my boss’s truck. We pulled the pan to inspect the engine before the installation.

    Turns out this engine was on borrowed time too. The 3 piece Thrust bearing broke. A not so common but very serious issue for all Cummins 5.9 to 6.7’s.

    If we had not checked, this engine would’ve had a windowed block at the same spot as the last engine.

    The upgraded part is the one piece thrust bearing either from Cummins or Clevite.

    But Cummins still makes these 3 piece thrust bearings during manufacturing to this day while offering the upgraded one piece bearing as a replacement for years.

    This is the 2005 Mercedes Benz MBE900.

    My boss bought this truck for really cheap. The engine was noisy.

    #5 rod bearing was gone.

    The cost to rebuild this engine was more than the cost to buy a used engine from a truck wrecker so we scrapped this engine.

    The engine we got from the wrecker, we pulled the pan and sure enough, #5 rod bearing was gone too, crank looked like the pictures as well, no need to take more pictures.

    Wrecker gave us another engine free of charge. This one looks perfect inside. So in the truck it went.

    My only experience with Mercedes are their inline 4 industrial engines. Straight up garbage. Below -10 they won't start without being plugged in. Even then they crank so dang slow that they never had a hope in hell in the first place.
