I was heading out of the bay area near Oakland on the 580 and just crossed the Richmond bridge. A few miles east about fifteen miles from the 5 I spotted a sign pointing to an exit. Said All truck over 4 tons must exit. I was one lane over and had trouble seeing out of the passenger side mirror because of the rain. I couldn't make the change to the exit lane and stayed on the highway. I didn't see and other trucks for the next ten miles and expected to see the bear lights coming behind me. Well, I made it to the five and breathed easier.
Is this really a restriction and if so why? There is no low clearance or light duty bridge.

Basically a Atlanta no no when you consider the ban against all trucks inside of the Atlanta City limits or the beltway to be exact. I think it's a thousand dollars against you personally for a ticket inviolation and that is a start of possibly more tickets.
Next time you see signs like that against your truck, GTFO of that road quick. Savvy?

2000-08-11 04:00:00 PDT SAN LEANDRO -- The 37-year-old ban on trucks on a segment of Interstate 580 is now state law after Gov. Gray Davis signed a bill yesterday making it permanent.
Trucks weighing more than 4.5 tons have been prohibited from I-580 between Grand Avenue in Oakland and the San Leandro border since the freeway opened more than 30 years ago.
"I am not in favor of legislative bans that restrict commerce," Davis said in a letter to the state Assembly. "However, in the East Bay, a ban on trucks on a 10-mile section of I-580 has been in continuous effect since 1963. A study by Caltrans found no reason to lift the ban. Driving in the Oakland area is not easy in a truck. I've also seen "no truck signs", on some of the many interstates in that area ending in the # 80. You were probably fine as I have found myself in similar predicaments on those interstates without issue. The 45 mph signs are a whole other issue.

I drive there all the time and I cannot figure out where you were. If you were a few miles from the 5 on 580 then you were a long ways from the Richmond bridge.

The best answer I can come up with is the Livermore Scales. That is about the right distance from 5. (between Vasco and Greenville roads)
I can't remember any truck bypass lanes in the 580/205/5 triangle, or anywhere else along that route for that matter.
The only other possibility would be 580 at 980, diverting trucks off of that restricted section through Oakland, but that seems too far away, plus coming off the Richmond Bridge, you probably would have routed down 80-880-238-580 anyway.
In any case, nobody pulled you over, so don't worry about it, this time! Lol -
I think he was on 580.He said he had just crossed the richmond bridge and was a few miles from the 5.He doesnt know exactly where he was.580 is the only freeway that fits that description to a tee!

Thats exactly where he was.He just crossed the Richmond bridge,mentions Oakland and 580 then says 5 is 15 miles away.He didnt know where he was.The top of the Altamont is 15 miles from I-5 and obviously wasnt there
