Of course it is.... Like this morning 4:30 am traveling at 55 mph and 2 elk decide to cross in front of me. Not enough time to stop they were going to the right so I hit the brakes and went left. That 4 point SOB turned and came back in front of me. cracked the hood in a couple of places and took out a head light. Could have been worse because I could have taken him broad side but just clipped him but it was still hard enough to kill him. Got a deer last week. Nope I don't have a herd bumper but I don't have a flimsy one either.

Hi tinytim, boy howdy, it sure is. I can't tell you how many close calls I've had in my career. But like the old saying goes, " A miss is as good as a mile". When you drive a big rig, you can never let your guard down, because sure as heck, that's when something happens. If your truck doesn't have one of those "cow catcher" bumpers. I suggest you get one, or tell the boss to get one. One hit, and it pays for itself. And get a dash cam. I wouldn't drive a truck now without either one. I hit several deer with my old Pete(below), but that thing was built like a tank, and usually just bent the bumper a little. Newer plastic trucks don't fare near as well.

Also those new ones have an air bubble on the end filled with helium which may help in an emergency.

Condoms and wildlife aside how often do you have to take quick action to avoid another motorized vehicle?

well let me think. I pull an oversize/width and over length load(the permitted ones that have the paperwork that is well read) weekly it seems as of late and YES it is very common to take evasive actions HOWEVER i am limited to just what type action that i can actually take.I simply can not jerk it over to the left lane in heavy traffic as idiots enter the highway without merging or i'd be at fault. therefore in heavy traffic, unfortunately i am relegated to the right lane,i merely drive slower and exercise more caution. Then when the traffic opens up,I too open it up and extricate myself from the heavy traffic.

you slow, less than the speed limit drivers can't do much other than stay in the cluster. in the cluster is where the chances increase three fold for an accident which is another reason to not drive some slow truck.

Hi tt, oh, bunch of truckers, you know. It shouldn't happen too often. When I drove, and to this day in my pickup, I 'd try and analyze what people were going to do. Seeing someone, especially older people,( old men wearing a hat or any old lady) slowing down or pointing, usually meant they were lost and were about to make a stupid move. Or a young woman, smoking a cigarette, talking on a cell phone, will usually make an abrupt move, or certain kinds of cars( black BMW's). After a while, with exceptions, of course, drivers seem to fall into certain categories. Animals are the exception, and you never know what an animal will do, in which case, hang on to the wheel, and shmear them( sorry animal lovers). I never would wreck the truck for an animal.
