Anybody that wants to float gears in a truck, go to town but I definitely wouldn't recommend doing it in a car or pickup. Unless you have to in order to get the car home or to the shop. It's a synchronized tranny, how hard is it to push in the clutch?
Amen on the clutch break. Back when I was mechaincin on trucks instead of driving them, if I would of had a nickel for every clutch break I replaced, I'd be a rich man. I've put a new one in just to have the driver tear it out the same day. Having to adjust the clutch every 10,000 miles was another thing. I don't care what anyone tells you, you should not be taking off in 5th gear empty and 3rd gear loaded. It's scary how many drivers have no idea what they're doing.

so when is the clutch needed or used ?
-
When you are coming to a stop and when going into reverse.
-
You might also want to use it when putting it in gear from neutral when you're sitting still...
It'll be a lot smoother getting started that way. -
I did my first float by accident. didn't realize what I was doing. after that I had to think about it now its just natural to float it.
-
I leave a little extra room in my top free play on the clutch when I adjust it so that I can disengage the Jakes by only depressing the clutch peddle the space of the free play. then I float the gears.
-
instead of having your clutch not adjusted correctly--wouldnt it be easier to set the micro switch a little closer?
your jakes should cut out way before you get to end of freeplay if switch is set right
just wondering is all -
I usually just keep my foot resting on the fuel pedal. This will take the pressure off te transmission and disengage the jakes at the same time. In most trucks. In the Cascadia I had, you had to switch the jakes off or you wouldn't be able to kick the RPM up even if you stood on the fuel. Something in the computer did that. I was flamed on these forums a few months ago because somebody had never heard of that. Just because you never heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It does not wear anything out if you flip the dash switch. It's just a PITA and gives us something else to b**** about.
This Prostar does not have that fuel cutout issue, so no need to turn off the jake to shift. -
@Mack185....I float gears in a little Ford dump truck with a synchronized 6 speed, seems to work great when I drive it once in a while. Maybe its not the same "synchronization" process but it really works out alright.
