The first thing you assume is I'm unable to shift up on whatever percent grade without the use of "jake shifting" The second thing you assume is you have the Horse Power. Your begining to sound like a rookie.

I float 99.9% of the time. I start off in 1st or 2nd gear (of 18 ) I don't touch the fuel till the clutch is all the way out and I rebuild the motor with the stock clutch in it..... But thats just me

I've owned quite a few trucks, I've always floated the gears and I've never seen any of the problems that you claim will be the result of floating gears.
I've had to go through a couple of trannies but the gears have alway been in good enough shape to use again.

If you know how to float gears correctly...It's easier on the transmission than using the clutch. The problem arises when a driver confuses "banging" it from gear to gear with floating.

If done correctly, It's easier on the gearbox than double clutching.

I always replace the clutch when I rebuild/replace a trans. whether it needs needs replacing or not, I just figure since I'm in there anyway and clutches aren't that expensive...Just replace it.

I think 90% of drivers float, so taking apart a tranny and being able to tell which one was "floated" and which wasn't doesn't sound entirely possible.

Damage to the clutch dogs comes from grinding it and forcing it into gear, clutch or not. There is less shock on the drivetrain when double-clutching if you barely miss a gear though... where the countershaft starts to turn faster than the main shaft when the clutch dog is just barely engaged.

So after reading all of this companies want you to double clutch but once you get out on the road get to know how to float because its easier for the driver and easier on the equipment.

ive only driven Army auto 5-6 spd Allisons and the OLD 5 spd trucks. So my issue is i have driven a TON of miles on Army tractor trailers countryside, but never anyting over a 5spd.So it sucks applying for places cause i dont know what to put, experienced or not.i got my cdl,but never driven the bigger trannies..lol

im new to the trucking industry but not reallly to driving.

id love to be able to practice on something to get a knack for it before hand

I don't encourage my drivers to float. The way I figure it is if they know how they will.If they don't then I don't want them learning on my trucks.Much as it pains me , we have mostly switched to auto transmissions because of the severe lack of experienced drivers over here in South Africa.
