I have the opportunity to buy a used mobile Cobra 148 NW ST for just over $90. Made in China, don't know the year manufactured. Used but works and has never been opened up. I want a SSB radio. Is this the way to go? Geez, it's too easy to spend money that I shouldn't.

Ive had a Cobra 148 GTL and Cobra 148 GTLF and both were very good radios, dont know if there is any truth to it , but I remember reading some posts on another cb forum that stated there were alot of problems with the NW model, could just be a rumor. If pilot still has them on sale you can get a Bearcat 980 ssb for $99.00, better radio than the 148 NW but I will choose the 148 GTLF over 980, just opinion.Bout Z Thanks this.

Dont buy it!!! $90 for that rig is outrageous!!
If a ssb radio is what your looking for, the newer front mic 148's are not what you want.. They arent stable on ssb at all. I have one here I use as a door stop, and its not even good for that.
They arent bad as an AM radio tho.
Only new cb that is worth having as a ssb rig, imo is the uniden 980..im not a galaxy fan
The old "side mic" 148's were gems, but are getting long in the tooth, and usually fetch around $100 depending on their condition.
The uniden grant xl and lt are the same radio (board) as the old 148's. The xl is a side mic, while the LT is a front mic, and were made up until the early 2k's.
There are alot more great ssb cb's, but most were made before this century lol. -
