I have a Cobra 19DXIV radio with a little wil antenna. This set up has been working fine until today. I could transmit fine, but I could not hear. The bar showed someone talking but I couldn't hear them. Could this be a speaker issue? Any ideas?

A quick check -
I assume you are using the internal speaker with the radio.
1 - did you check the squelch to see if it is active?
1a- is the RF gain turned up?
2 - do you hear static on any channel?
3 - do you hear other people talking any where?
4 - do people hear you speak?
If all of these things are no, then it can be a couple things, the first is a bad mic cord or a broken connection within the plug or a bad speaker. It is more likely that the mic cord or a connection is bad in the mic plug than it can be a blown speaker.
If you are using an external speaker, disconnect it and see what happens.25(2)+2 and michaelaruby5 Thank this. -
Mic connections are usually what is wrong here.
michaelaruby5 Thanks this. -
Yep...with Cobra radios you have to have the Mic plugged in, and it has to be good...That radio does not have a "RF Gain" knob, and since you say the meter shows signals coming in, I doubt it would be the antenna...
Check the squelch Knob and make sure it's turned all the way to the left...
Try a different Mic...
If those two things check out OK, then take the bottom cover off and see if the speaker is still plugged in...You can also try plugging in a external speaker and see if you get sound.michaelaruby5 and 25(2)+2 Thank this. -
If I find out it's the mic and have to replace it, what is a recommended model for the mic?
-
If it's the mic, it's probably just a wire inside with a broken solder joint.
Easy fix.Turbo-T Thanks this. -

Astaic 636L, RK 56, a RF Limited Xtream 2018 would be nice, since it's a power mic, Noise canceling mic, and also has echo!
Only deal with the RF Limited Mic tho is it would cost ya more than the radio did. lol -
The mic cord swings around when mobile and overtime the wires inside break. It's normal and as said, easy fix.
Honestly for your radio I'd recommend the old school coffin mics. Or maybe an Astatic 575-M6 if you can find one and have the $$ for one since they're no longer made and people command high prices for them....but they're worth it on a radio w/o a mic gain IMO -
If you go in and repair your current mic, here's something that I did to mine.
Once you've verified your solder work by making sure the mic is working, put a small amount of hot glue in there on top of the solder joints and around and between the wires. That will help prevent the solder joints from vibrating and breaking loose again .
I did this after repairing my Astatic twice in 6 months.jessejamesdallas Thanks this.
