The LED in the radio is suppose to changed from green to red anytime you key up regardless if the SWR is good or bad.
When you switched to the 4 ft. steel whip, does the whip have a loading coil? Or is it just a straight piece of steel wire from the bottom on up?

Yes, It has a coil at the bottom about 6 " tall with an allen screw for height adjustment.

Do you know what brand/part number antenna? I'll try and look it up. Only other thing I can think of is if possibly there's a short circuit as in the nylon washer for the mount is broken or non existent.

The washer is like new. The antenna came off of another truck and there are no visible markings as to what brand it might be. The Base is a tan color about 6 or seven inches tall. Thanks for the come-back. I appreciate the help.

Just for reference. The Radio is a Cobra 29 LTD Chrome that I just bought new, peaked and tuned from a C.B. shop in Gainsville , Florida. Don't know if that would make any difference.
