So I bought this radio a few months ago, and it has worked great for about 2 months. Then just the other day, it got to where I wasn't hearing anyone talk. So I checked my squelch, and turned it down, and never heard any static. So I have it bottomed out, and the volume all the way up. All I can hear is people talking when they go by me, and it last about 30 seconds. Muffled at the beginning and end of what I can hear of them(fading in and out). The meter on the display is bottomed out, and it says it is receiving(because squelch is bottomed out), but nothing I adjust brings it back up. Do I have a bad radio, and should I swap it out for a new one?
I haven't pulled the radio to check antenna connection(no tools), but I don't see how it could come off since it screws on and I tightened it all the way down when I installed it. That and the fact that it does actually pick up within about an 1/8 to 1/4 mi. radius.

Adjust the RF gain knob?
-
Just moved it up and down with no luck.

Sounds like a bad connection with the coax if the RF Gain is turned all the way up...I would first check at the antenna, then check at the back of the radio...It could be screwed in all the way, and still have a connector shorted out...Doubt it's the radio, I have two of these 29's and never had any kind of problem out of them.
You can do a "Radio Check" on that radio by going into the menu and scrolling down to "Radio Check" and it will tell you if the antenna is bad (or coax) It will say "FAIL" if there's a antenna problem. (This is where you would be checking your SWR, and if it says FAIL, then your SWR is high, but it could be caused by a coax connector, or pinched coax, cracked or broke antenna...)
I would check this first before buying another radio. -
It has always said that it had a bad antenna. Every time I key down it shows it, but it was getting out fine up to about 1.5 miles in and out. Then just the other day it lost at least the receiving, not sure if it is getting out further or not(I doubt it). I will get it pulled when I get back home, and see if I can find out what it may be.
Where would there be a connector shorted out I can check for? And how do you get to whatever I am looking for(2012 Cascadia, radio overhead)?
Thanks -
You might have killed the radio by not adjusting your SWR/checking the antenna. When you press the PTT on the mic, the cb transmits power to the antenna to broadcast your voice. Since it didn't have a proper outlet for that energy, it sent that power back into the radio possibly overloading the circuits inside(think turning on a water hose then pinching it to create pressure). That's my diagnosis from the info given.
I take it you didn't read the owner's manual, right? -
Yes I read it, but didn't know what I could do to fix it, or what if anything was wrong. It just said how to check it, but not what to do to fix anything, or what could be causing it. All I know is it has an antenna, connected to a coax, connected to the back of the radio. I figured it either worked or didn't. I also set the SWR like the manual said, and they were dead on what the book said they should be.

I'd suggest to get the radio tested at a cb shop to find out if it still works(transmit/receive). The coax in the truck is probably bad if you got the antenna failure from the very beginning.
-
Or, I could buy a new one, and take the old one back and get my money back. So what could be wrong with the coax? I do know the driver before me broke the antenna off this truck, and they had to replace it. Not sure what would have went bad with the coax there. Maybe I'll get it figured out.
-
Depending on the model of truck, to coax might be bad due to it being bent all the time at the door hinge point. If your antenna is mounted on the mirror bracket and the mirror is mounted on the door and moves when you open and close the door then your coax is being contantly bent each and every time the door opens. This is real bad for coax.
If the radio said you had bad swr or it failed the swr test then you should have had someone look at the coax and antenna before operating the radio. Only being able to transmit or hear 1 or 1 1/2 miles is not good. If everything is in working order then you should have easily been able to hear and transmit out to 8-10 miles.
If you want a radio to live then you have to have proper coax. 50 ohm coax for a single antenna or two 75 ohm coax for dual antennas. You can not use a single antenna on a cophased or dual antenna coax.
The antenna bracket has to be properly grounded.
Make sure the antenna itself is not grounded. There is a plastic washer on the antenna bracket that isolates the antenna from being grounded.
A decent antenna that is not damaged. I see too many fiberglass antennas that are damaged and the user had no clue.
