Cobra 29 lx max problem

Actually, the more I research it, the more sold I am on either the President Johnson II AM only, or the AM/SSB McKinley.

 

Volvo, I have found the same to be true with the 29's in regard to below average receive and you ask a cb shop about an alignment and they are clueless , yet from my experience the Bearcat 980 and President Mckinley are over sensitive but excellent just have to reduce rf gain level. By the way good to see you posting again havnt heard from you in a while.

 

The Mckinley is an excellent radio, good receive, good transmit,good modulation ( 980 stock mic) and plenty of features. As I posted on another thread the radio picks up alot engine noise, that no other radio does,I can hear the rpm's increase or decrease and can hear transmission shift( auto) its quite annoying, Im guessing its coming through the antenna's, but for that reason havnt been using it much. Sitting still it works great, especially sideband.

 

I can legally transmit 1500 watts as a general class HAM but not on CB bands. Everyone is limited to 4 watts. How common it is to break the law doesn't make it legal or ok.

And yes, a tech license is super easy. The questions are common sense. The general is much harder and the extra is crazy.

 

I don't get how this forum can ban people from discussing cleaning out their exhaust because of "legal issues" but are perfectly fine with people discussing how to break another law, the wattage limit of the CB band. If you have a good antenna you don't NEED more power.

I was talking to one guy, an Ashley furniture driver, who had a 75 watt amp. When he got off at the exit we continued to talk. I lost him before he lost me. He was quickly getting weaker to the point of being inaudible and I said how do you hear me and the last thing I heard was "loud and clear" and I was barefoot with a pro510xl that was 20 years old.

Breaking the law is breaking the law, how do you block one and condone the other?

 

Well i have no need for 1800 watts to over come possible short comming of your set up..
You may have the reflect you say but without an ohm meter you dont know what your impedences are,you have 2 coax vs 1 and extra connections so whos to say one is better than the other or resistances.....Do you know if your ant is resonante or where?..Just to say you got 1%reflect doesnt mean squat,those can be easily fooled as well..cb shops fool you into thinkin ya got huge power when in reality ya got squat.....
Dont get me wrong,not crappin on your set up but i get the feeling its not what you think it is..
Ground plain and electrical grounding are two different animals and hust grounding your amp to batterys doesnt mean your well grounded at all..
Im still learning for real now in these cpl yrs last but running radios for yrs.....Lot more to it than most know..Post a pic of your ant set up..Courious to see..Just jumped outta a 16 into a 19..Barely had time to get my radio in and workin as good as it does..Cant be bothered with a big amp..No point in my eyes..Yeah its cool to have but if they cant reply to your comment whats the point..Ya end up sounding like a typical loud mouth american that talks to himself all day long and blanketing out everyone else...
I ran with a fella who ran a big sweet 16 with all the goodys and a 30k ant..lost him after about 8 miles..Yet i talked to others further away...

You people with the SWR and all of that crap. My god if you really knew what was going on ....

SWR isn't the most important thing, it is sort of important on a unbalanced feedline but outside of that ....

 

Just wondering if you have your LX power leads going to the battery or some other continuous power source. I have a 25lx that it retains the clock settings ok. If you lose power by turning off the ignition key, then yes the radio will lose its settings.

 

Umm SWR is critical to your antenna setup. Too high an SWR and you will not only have poor transmit performance but you can risk burning out your finals.

Whoever told you that SWR wasn't important......don't take any more advice from them. I'm an 11 year HAM radio operator.
