Hi all,
I scored a Cobra 29 NW LTD Classic through Craigslist the other day. I paid $30 and everything about the radio is perfect. Fairly new-- manufactured July 2012. The stock mic doesn't work, but my Cobra 25 stock mic doesn't work either, if you recall one of my older threads. Plugged in my Astatic 636 Noise-Cancelling mic, and it talks very well. I believe the radio is stock. I like the SWR warning LED. The built-in SWR meter is cool, but doesn't seem as refined (accurate) as my external Radio Shack meter. Using my Wilson little wil mag mount, the Radio Shack meter shows a gradual SWR incline going up the channels; it is a bit too long of an antenna. The internal SWR meter only seems to show near perfect or near 3 SWR, not a gradual incline throughout the band. I quickly keyed up without an antenna plugged in to see the ANT red LED light up. Good enough for approximating.
I'll probably ship it to Kelly in North Las Vegas to do his tune-up and add echo in place of the dimmer switch (it is my new toy after all). What do you all think about these radios? I know they're generally highly praised, but I like to read everyone's anecdotes.

Don't mess with it, if works, leave it alone.
Echo?
Seriously you really don't want to be understood.j_martell Thanks this. -
I agree with Ridgeline , leave it stock, I have the same radio , manufacture Nov 10, and run it stock in my mobile with a Wilson 1000 Magnet mount antenna with a Ranger SRA 198 mic, and have no problem talking to locals 10 to 15 miles and everyone says its loud and clear. Not that its all that important did once check it on a meter and it was deadkeying 5 watts pep swing to 20 watts OTB.

In addition I forgot to mention the receive is excellent, very low static and hiss, might be the best NB/ANL filter on a radio that I have had next to a Cobra 148 GTLF and I hear other CBs way off in the distance. Also like the fact that it has a dimmer knob in place of the Delta tune, can somebody tell me why they still put on the Delta tune, isnt it leftover from the old crystal radios?

So you'll have a spot to put the echo knob. That's the only reason I can figure, anyway. Unless a guy wants to use that spot for variable power, but I've never needed it.BTShepp Thanks this.

I am torn. This radio seems excellent stock. I trust Kelly, he uses proper equipment and keeps radios clean. As far as echo, I know it doesn't make you talk further or anything stupid, but for local talk, I think a little sounds nice. Most importantly, it would be switchable to turn off completely.

I guess you have to decide if it is worth getting 1 or 2 watts of carrier and possibly 5 to 10 watts( maybe ) more of pep swing, that some will say swing isnt important. If the radio is stock modulation may be in the 85% ballpark, you could always open it up and increase modulation level to 100% by adjusting VR4, there is an article on cbradiomagazine.com that shows you how to do it, but then again that may not be necessary.
