Picked up an external speaker thinking the internal was bad out the box. But they sound exactly the same. It's muffled and everyone sounds bad.

I have a unmodified 29 and a Firestik . I also have a Wilson 2000 antenna that a previous driver left in the truck. But it's missing a piece that would allow me to acrwq it to my Volvo.

I'm new to the CB thing. Just want to be able to understand folks.

    Where so I start

If the CB is new, return it for a replacement. It may be out of tune. A 29 doesn't have sideband or other modes that could cause it to sound muffled.

And you're sure your antenna setup is correct? Take it to a cb shop that has an antenna analyzer and let them tune the antenna. Should only cost $15-20.

Do NOT let just anyone inside your radio. There are way too many hack shops out there. A stock 29 should perform just fine.

In a Volvo, if you want the best performance, you need to use one good antenna, and run YOUR OWN COAX. The factory coax runs thru a multiplex box that divides the signal. It's pretty much useless.

Get the bracket for that Wilson, get some coax, and see if that makes the radio clear. If it doesn't, swap the radio.

Which external speaker? Cheap ones usually sound bad. This speaker sounds just fine.

II'm with Werner. Does running my own coax involve modifying the truck?

Not as long as you don't drill any holes. If you run the antenna on the passenger side (if you're not teaming) just gently close it in the door jamb near the window, parallel to the seal so it doesn't get kinked. Then wire tie it to the mirror bracket.

If you want to run it on the driver's side, you'll have to look for existing holes in the firewall to get the coax outside.

    Thanks for the help.

Does it matter what brand coax i get? I try and stick with TA when i can. Seem to have better stores IMO

It seems to be pretty much the same stuff regardless of what the name is on the package

I drove a Werner truck back in 2004 and I ran my own cable without modifying the truck. We had Wing Windows back in those days though.

Except the Wilson RG8x with the FME connector. I went through three packages of that and every one had a shorted connector.

    I wouldn't recommend that stuff.
