What version of the cobra 29 works best as far as signal? I don't care much about the bt or chr9me versions. I just want something that is reliable and works good. Can't find a 148gtl :(

I would recommend the good old tried and true cobra 29 ltd classic. No bells, fancy display, wx, but just a simple radio to use. As far as the best signal goes, unfortunetly the new out of the box radios need a proper tx and rx alignment. Seems a shame that people have to spend more $$$ on a new radio. It doesn’t really need an alignment if your happy with its performance out of the box.

Given the antiquity, why? Wouldn’t it need a fair amount of work to be reliable?

Several on eBay @ $15. Plus about as much to ship.

    So,

What should be done if it otherwise powers up?

What's antique about it, it is the same circuit in that than almost all the others - with exception of the frequency generation section.

Everything that is done to a newer (not the latest version) can be done to that version.

In fact it may be a better version to use.

Just because it is old doesn't mean it isn't any good!

    brian991219 and Slowmover1 Thank this.

Thinking that age may have deteriorated componentry.

What might one expect it to need?

The “tone “ of my questions came off wrong. No more caffeine, Ridgeline

I’m genuinely interested in your recommendation.

Haven’t forgotten how great my Dads rarely used Johnson Messenger sounded, and the flat best mobile audio I’ve ever heard (same radio) from a lady pilot car driver across Louisville two years ago.

Would you buy the $15 versions on eBay today?

The only issue is with the caps. that's it.

I think others can chime in on the question too ... HINT ... :)

I have bought $5 specials on ebay, and got a few from garage and estate sales for a couple bucks. The last purchase is sitting in my pickup and worked without a problem - Motorola Mocat cost a whole $1

I found a cobra 29 classic for $20. It's made In China... Ive heard China cobra products aren't good. Is that true?

I don't see the differences, but then you have anal people who will look at the source of the parts for front panel like the knobs to get the right radio.
