Looking for help. Got a cobra 29 with a k40 antenna. Was in the middle of nowhere Colorado and trying to get out on ch9 for help. Never could get out. If I'm running the expressway I'm fine getting out a couple of miles. Do I need an amp to get out when I'm in the middle of nowhere

Alright guys doing a little tinkering looking around while out here at the truck stop before I get home. Was looking at the inverter and noticed something...
It appears there's a ground post with nothing attached on the inverter to ground the inverter its self... could this cause my noise issue? Should I make a little jumper to connect to the ground side of the big cables? I believe the trucks fiberglass so short of running a wire to the battery or some other ground location I figure the cable would serve the same purpose. -

Side note. If you're ever in a dire emergency situation even if your phone has no service you can still dial 911. I was told this from a park ranger once when we checked into a national park in north west arkansas to do some hiking. We were told no matter what if we needed help call 911 no matter if we had service itd ping off satellite and notify the authorities, if that's true or not idk but never hurts to try anyway in case you're out somewhere and it actually does work vs but trying because you think it wont workHarrisem Thanks this. -
I always advocate running a little extra power. Four watts is crap. Thats my opinion. -

Add to that to check fast as the Internet and cell service is supposed to go down shortly. The Prez will be making a radio speech shortly at noon.
You’ll hear PTT buttons breaking all over the place.
All today’s Basement Boys expect someone to do their talking for them. They’ve nothing to say as no one ever asked them before . . our schools are beyond bad. Religious dogma about fake history.
Just find a subject that causes them to sputter.

Sounds like a antenna or antenna line or both, First disconnect the coax both ends ohm it out make sure you have continuity end to end and do not have a short between the center conductor and the shield, if all thats good make sure you have a good ground on the bar on the back of the cab where it is mounted. Clean and tight makes it right. So to speak, next check the antenna mount make sure it is not shorted center to ground should be open, reinstall the antenna. check the swr on 1 then 40. set the switch to calibrate, adjust to the top or the red line, set switch back to swr write down the reading then check it on the other channel. you may need to adjust the stinger on the antenna ( 1/4 inch at a time. do this without a trailer. A trailer will give you a bad reading because of reflective power.
There's tons of thread about this stuff if you look for them. Hope this Helps.
And yes I am a tech, worked for Motorola 2-way Commercial Radios for many years also a General Class Ham. Good LuckSlowmover1 Thanks this. -
You need to sort out the antenna problems first, then if there is still a problem with noise, handle that separately, Maybe with some Cap's or a Choke , theres lots of ways to minimize noise

Well since no one is answering your question, I will take a stab at it. I would take an ohm meter and check for continuity (very low ohm reading) between the inverters ground lug and the big main ground cable. If you get a low ohm reading, then running a ground wire to the frame probably won’t make any difference with the noise coming from the inverter.
If you get a high ohms reading, then run a wire from the ground lug to the frame just to see if it makes a difference or not.Lysdexis Thanks this. -
